A

“Freelancing? I love it!” This is the final statement of the interview with our freelancer of the week, Andrew Moko. As a co-founder of a young start-up in Kenia, Andrew Moko knows exactly about the challenges and problems of building an own business in the IT-industry. But hard work has been rewarded and Andrew Moko nowadays makes a living as a fulltime freelancer. Let us find out how he got there…

1) First off, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Andrew Moko, Kenya. I am the co-founder of BigDInsight – a startup company that is mainly focused on Big Data and J2EE technologies. I have been in the freelancing/ consulting business for about 5 years.
2) If you would search for your profile on Google, which are the three keywords you would type in the search bar?
Big Data, J2EE technologies, Graphic Design.
3) What was your inspiration and when did you actually decide to become a freelancer?
I have had my share working for big corporations. It´s much more fun working in smaller motivated teams. I freelance full-time alongside other talented individuals.
4) What kind of services have your clients asked you to provide?
Big Data Consultancy, J2EE Solutions, Web Applications, Web Design etc.
5) Do you use other freelancers or companies to provide skills that you don’t possess?
Experience has taught me that you can never be a jack of all trades. I have a list of freelancers who possess skills in specific fields.
6) Now tell us, how do you find new clients that are interested in your services?
We have our own website (http://www.bigdinsight.com), facebook page, and we have published our profile on various freelancing websites.
7) What about freelancermap.com? Can you tell us a little bit about your experience with our IT-network?
Feedback is great. Support is perfect!
8) How do you set yourself apart from your competitors? What makes you special?
We offer to provide support after developing and selling a product.
9) What are the top three books, blogs or magazines you read to stay up to date in the IT-market?
www.bigdata-startups.com, www.theserverside.com
10) Freestyle! Is there anything you would like to tell our readers?
Freelancing is hard work, though you don´t get to be confined in an 8-5 program. It gives one room to think out of the box, and exposes one to different markets/ clients. I love it!
