Remote Linux System Admin

Description

Kira Systems is looking for a Linux Sysadmin that is available on an ongoing basis from UTC, Monday—Friday. Duties include server monitoring, maintenance, and support for our clients working outside of North American business hours.

Although we are based in the Toronto area we are aiming to hire someone in Europe/South Africa or Australia/New Zealand/Japan — this role is intended for a remote candidate.

The role is aimed at the Junior to Intermediate level: our ideal candidate would have good familiarity with technologies mentioned below, the drive to learn more about them, and some demonstrated ability to dig into ambiguous problems and find a solution.

Responsibilities:

maintaining and monitoring our production and development environments

supporting our infrastructure

supporting self-hosted virtual machines at client sites

handling client support issues

documenting client questions and incidents

Primary requirements:

Personal:

available during UTC

clean background check

good oral and written communication skills

a curious-minded and independent work ethic

troubleshooting-oriented

Technical:

experience in Linux systems administration

strong knowledge of system security

knowledge of VMware

knowledge of cluster automation tools (e.g. especially ansible)

proficiency with PostgreSQL

proficiency with scripting for automating tasks (we use Python and a bit of Bash)

Nice to have/bonus points:

knowledge of AWS

knowledge of Docker

knowledge of RabbitMQ

experience with JVM-based languages (Clojure in particular)

experience maintaining highly-available PostgreSQL installations

experience with highly-available systems in general

experience building distributable virtual machines

experience working remotely

a university degree in computer science (or related field)
