Background

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. CALM provides support for men in crisis through a helpline and webchat service, as well as high-profile campaigns that raise awareness of the issue of male suicide.

CALM has been through a period of rapid growth across all parts of the organisation and is now at a very exciting point in our development, as we build on this growth, as well as the rise of male suicide and mental health issues on society’s agenda.

Our website serves three principal functions:

  • It provides support for men (through access to our services and specific content)
  • It raises awareness and acts as a forum for stimulating content
  • Encourages participation in our campaign (whether that is fundraising, volunteering, inspiring engagement or acting as a catalyst for other people to generate more of their own content).

This is a part-time to redevelop our website to meet the increased needs of the organisation, including developing accompanying software infrastructure (building, testing, version control, deploying), maintaining the site, integration with third party services / social media, optimising performance and increasing the reliability of the service. You will need to be comfortable managing projects and working with a team of people to collaborate on content, design, CMS requirements and so on.

Site technologies

The CALM site is built on WordPress, with quite a number of plug-ins including ACF, Tribe Calendar and Gravity Forms. CRM functionality is added to WordPress through Salesforce via FormAssembly, which is included on the site as embedded HTML forms. Google Analytics is used to gather data for campaign reports and a/b testing. Bitbucket (git) is used for version control.

Overall objectives of the role

  • Regular maintenance
  • (Re)design
  • Development of digital products and services to help CALM’s future development

  • Ensure that CALM websites are effectively hosted, maintained and backed up, and that the sites are running to full functionality at all times.
  • Develop and maintain a manual of how-to documents, passwords, software used and so on, so that knowledge of the site can be maintained by CALM internally.
  • Allow internal teams to access and update the CMS independently
  • Ensure that CALM’s website(s) are compatible with multiple platforms/browsers, as well as meeting user standards for the visually impaired and hard of hearing.
  • Ensure that the website adheres to all UK legislation and recommended nationally recognised guidelines, including privacy policies and data protection.
  • Ensure the site is effectively firewalled and respond to any hosting/hacking problems should they arise.
  • A good knowledge of emerging social media plug-ins, tools and technologies to ensure that we maintain and develop the most effective integration of social and communication networks on the site.
  • Work with Web editor on developing SEO of the site.
  • Ensure Google Analytics is fully integrated into all CALM sites, and that all pages/content are fully trackable for analysis.
  • Google Analytics data analysis experience an advantage, particularly in terms of developing the CALM site in response to data findings.

Design development

  • In combination with CALM’s design agency and Communications team, we are about to embark on refreshing the overall design of thecalmzone.net
  • The ideal candidate should have experience of managing website re-designs, working with team internally and external agencies
  • At the same time and following the re-design, the web developer is responsible for ongoing design changes and user experience improvements
  • Design and build microsites & additional landing pages to support CALM campaigns and initiatives.
  • Integrate MyNewsDesk RSS feed on homepage and embed MyNewsDesk content within pages on CALM site.

Innovation

  • Integrate Salesforce Form Assembly forms within the CALM website to enable robust and accurate data capture across the different areas of the site.
  • Work with the Engagement team and Service Director to come up with digital iterations of new products and services that can help support men “upstream”
  • Create ways to implement an automated process for support and men’s agencies to maintain up update their own details directly on the site.
