What is a light vehicle technician?

You would probably call a service technician a car mechanic. But in the industry we have been using the term service technician for years. This job involves working on vehicles and using all the latest diagnostic equipment and technology (i.e. gadgets that help you work out why the vehicle's not working properly). We'll teach you to diagnose faults and repair them, how to service vehicles and carry out routine maintenance.

What is the work like?

Light vehicle technicians will service and repair vehicles such as cars, and vans. Technicians will be trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features. The duties of a light vehicle technician may include:
• Servicing vehicles - carrying out checks and maintenance according to the manufacturers' guidelines
• Repairing and replacing faulty parts and components
• Advising the customers or the service department about required repairs
• Producing time estimates
• Maintaining repair and service records

How will I learn on a light vehicle technician apprenticeship?

This course usually takes three years to gain an NVQ/VCQ Level 3. To do this you'll go to a further education (FE) college, either on day or block release. The rest of the time will be spent in a place of employment where you will get to learn practical skills from seeing the real working environment. You will shadow qualified technicians so that you are able to learn first-hand how to repair faults and damage. You will also get the opportunity to assist in the repair work. Once you pass your assessments and progress through your course you will be able to start completing tasks on your own. To ensure you are competent in completing tasks on your own a Remit assessor will visit you periodically at the work place to complete assessment testing with you.
