Description

Completing an Automotive Apprenticeship will provide you with a trade for life which you can use throughout your career. With skills gained in a real trade you will have a lifelong ability to work within the automotive industry. This apprenticeship will also provide you with industry skills, which may one day lead to you setting up your own business.

What is a parts consultant?

You'll be learning to deal with customers and people in the workshops and dealerships, making sure the parts everyone needs are available. You will learn how to do the invoicing, phoning and ordering - and you'll develop a good technical knowledge of vehicles so that you know where a part goes and what it does.

What is the work like?

Parts consultants are also known as vehicle parts operatives or parts advisors. They are responsible for ordering, selling and managing stock control on a wide range of vehicle parts and accessories.

Duties may vary from employer to employer but will typically include:
• Advising customers on how to solve a problem with their vehicle
• Taking orders from customers both face to face and over the phone
• Maintaining an ordered stock room and finding parts from stock
• Raising invoices for parts sold
• Liaison with other members of staff
• Customers may include members of the public, service departments of dealerships, and garages.

How will I learn on a parts consultant apprenticeship?

This course usually takes three years to gain an NVQ/VCQ Level 3. To do this you won't need to go to a further education (FE) college or training centre. Your time will be spent in a place of employment where you will get to learn practical skills from seeing the real working environment. You will shadow qualified parts consultants and advisors so that you are able to learn first-hand how to go about your job. You will also get the opportunity to assist in the day to day tasks. Once you pass your assessments and progress through your course you will be able to start completing tasks on your own. To ensure you are competent in completing tasks on your own a Remit assessor will visit you periodically at the work place to complete assessment testing with you.

What skills are required for me to gain this apprenticeship?

As a parts consultant you will need to demonstrate:
• A good technical understanding and general knowledge of how motor vehicles work
• Good communication skills
• Willingness to keep technical knowledge updated in order to provide the most efficient service possible
• Confidence in processing payments
• The ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
• Confidence in problem solving

Salary:

During your apprenticeship, the employer you are working for will pay you a salary. This will be a minimum of £2.73 an hour. Some employers pay more than this and some offer other benefits and incentives.
