The Education and Technology Departments at the Brooklyn Museum are seeking a 3D Designer to help manage a major 3D printing initiative that would engage NYC youth as part of the Museum’s Gallery/Studio Program. As part of this project, youth, working with 3D technology will be invited to collaborate with a contemporary artist to reimagine the Brooklyn Museum’s collection in a creative and collaborative undertaking. The resulting project will then be presented at the Maker Faire New York in September, 2014. Once hired, you’d work on all aspects of planning and coordinating this exciting program.  Job responsibilities include:

  • Work with the project team of artists, technologists, and educators to plan and coordinate the program within the existing Gallery/Studio Program;
  • Provide youth, artist, and instructor 3D support during classes and field trips;
  • Work as a bridge between the contemporary artist, the youth participants, and the project’s Teaching Artist to realize the final project;
  • Assist in the setup and breakdown of equipment for classes;
  • Help supervise field trips to an industrial 3D printing lab and Maker Faire;
Here’s our skill checklist:
  • Extensive experience with 3D modeling and printing using off the shelf hardware, existing printing manufacturing facilities, and open source software;
  • A strong desire to work with young people and/or adults;
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills;
Work schedule:              
  • 8-10 classes per semester, scheduled Saturdays or Sundays;
  • Attendance at 3-4 planning meetings to take place prior to the start of the semester in April-June;
  • Attendance at a half day field trip to a 3D printing lab which will take place during the semester;
  • Attendance at full day field trip to Maker Faire New York in late September 2014.

  • Maker Faire New York: September 20, 2014 or September 21, 2014 (TBD)
This is a contracted position with a set fee to be allocated in the payments over the course of the project’s duration. The project will take place at the Museum’s offices in Brooklyn and qualified candidates must be able to commute to the Brooklyn Museum.
