4 Reasons why Email Lists are a Good Marketing Strategy

I could almost hear you wonder as you read the title: “Email lists, is that really a thing?” Yes, it is, and it’s still one of the most efficient ways to communicate with your clients. Email is the one channel of communication that is always on, arrives directly to the recipient and is actually controlled by you, instead of, say, a social media company.

Email marketing might seem old school and has taken a reputation hit by the increasing number of spammers. But it’s definitely something to consider as part of your freelancing marketing strategy. Here are four reasons why:

1) Clients check their emails daily and pay attention

Inboxes are there for work and people know that. When they’re in the office, their email is running and alerting them, maybe it’s even doing that when they’re on their mobile. That’s much different than using social media. Facebook or Twitter for example, can be useful for your clients, but they’re likely channels where the reader expects to be distracted. It’s not a place you go for professional content only. As such, people are bound to be more concentrated than when reading emails, especially their business emails.
 

2) It feels more personal than most other marketing channels

When you’re sending out an email, people get it, right in their inbox. They look at it, see their name on it and know that it was meant for them. Now maybe you just sent them the last updates to your business models and pricing or your newsletter – but it still feels personal. They don’t have to go to your site, click on the download button and read through a PDF. They don’t have to scroll through their Facebook timeline or go to your page. The email is there – and it’s waiting for them specifically. The only way to get more personal nowadays are phone calls. And emails are way less time consuming in the long run.

3) Regular mails keep your name present

If you send the right type of emails, don’t spam and provide valuable information, your email list will help you make sure clients remember your name. It can be difficult to keep in touch with all your clients, especially if you’re in the middle of a couple of projects. But if you make it your habit to send an email per week, for example, you can utilize your mailing list to make sure you never forget keeping in touch with old clients.

And once that email starts coming in every week, they’ll see your name in their inbox. Sure, maybe not everyone will read all your new blog posts, but your name will be there. And that’s what matters. Because the next time they think about which freelancer to contact, that is more likely to be you.
 

4) It doesn’t cost a lot

Using email lists doesn’t have to cost a single dime. You don’t need fancy programs, you just need an excel table and some self-made text templates. Compared to targeted ads on social media or other places, email is the cheapest personal marketing strategy you can get. Naturally, sending out the emails and preparing the list will cost time. But especially at the beginning of your freelancing career, you have to put in that time and probably don’t have much in the way of finances for costly ads. Invest that time wisely, an email list can be more useful than most people think!
