What is control engineering?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Control engineering<\/strong> is also referred to as control systems engineering<\/strong>. It\u2019s a discipline in engineering that uses control theory to design and develop systems and is related to mechanical and electrical engineering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control engineering<\/strong> is key in many user control systems that range from a simple dishwasher to an airplane. These systems are designed to function with minimal or even zero human intervention. (E.g., cruise control in auto vehicles). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice, \u201ccontrol\u201d refers to the use of tools such as sensors or detectors to measure results of a process. <\/strong>The result in turn is used to influence the control loop, and thus the input influences the controlled output – ultimately achieving the desired performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control technology is divided into 3 different types of controls: binary, analog and digital controls<\/strong>. Analog controls are disappearing more and more from electrical engineering and today control engineering<\/strong> mainly refers to binary and digital controls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binary controls include actuators <\/strong>such as lights, valves,<\/strong> and smaller motors. With binary controls, the control system may be responsible for regulating lighting systems, water flows, or the movements of vehicle drives. Digital controls <\/strong>are based on the processing of data signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsibilities of a Control System Engineer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A control engineer<\/strong> is responsible for research, design, and management of the development of the equipment <\/strong>used to monitor and control systems and machinery. They make sure that the processes run safely and efficiently.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To design a complete control system<\/strong>, control engineers <\/strong>need in-depth knowledge of the processes they want to produce, which may involve talking to the personnel who operate the equipment and to the engineers <\/strong>who designed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control engineers<\/strong> must choose the tools they need to take the correct measurements for the system. They can lead teams of workers, including other engineers and technicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control engineers also modify existing systems<\/strong> and improve them to make them safer, more efficient, and more economical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
