This is a unique identification number for foreigners and is necessary for any official process in Spain. This includes renting a property, buying a car, paying your taxes and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few different ways that you can apply for the NIE. If you\u2019re abroad, you can either apply for it via a Spanish consulate or a representative living in Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re already in Spain, however, you can apply for it by making an appointment with the local Immigration Office. You will need need the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two copies of the <a href=\"https:\/\/extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es\/ficheros\/Modelos_solicitudes\/mod_solicitudes2\/15-Formulario_NIE_y_certificados.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EX-15 form<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of legal entry into Spain (for non-EU nationals)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two passport-sized photographs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Bank account<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before registering as self-employed in Spain, you will need to <strong>open a bank account<\/strong>. Fortunately, the process for this is relatively simple and straight-forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how long you\u2019re planning to stay in Spain, you can either open a non-resident bank account or a resident one. If you\u2019re planning on staying for more than 6 months, you will need to open a resident bank account. For this, you will require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your passport or national identity card (for EU citizens)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of employment (eg. tax return)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certificate of non-residency \u2013 this can be obtained by going to the police station or Foreign Office<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4 Registration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to <strong>register as self-employed in Spain<\/strong> before starting any freelance work. You will need to register with both the tax agency and social security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tax agency<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenciatributaria.es\/AEAT.internet\/en_gb\/Inicio\/Ayuda\/_comp_Consultas_informaticas\/Categorias\/Otros_servicios\/Cita_previa\/Peticion_de_cita_previa_a_traves_de_internet\/Peticion_de_cita_previa_a_traves_de_internet.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Agencia Tributaria<\/em><\/a><em> or Hacienda<\/em>) is a public administration that collects taxes quarterly from an aut\u00f3nomo. You will need to book an appointment with the agency before you can register \u2013 you can do this via the agency\u2019s website and choose an office that is closest to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registering at the tax agency requires you to have an NIE, a Spanish bank account and if you\u2019re from outside the EU, a work permit or visa. At the office, you will be required to choose a category that corresponds to your freelance activity. Once you do this, you will be required to complete a form \u2013 either 036 or 037.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also need to register with the census here and choose your tax scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Social security<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone working in Spain is required to <strong>contribute to the social security system<\/strong>. And so, after registering at the tax agency, you will need to register with your local social security office in Spain within 30 days.
