According to Matthew, the growth has been&nbsp;<em>steady and resilient<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The independent workforce has grown between 10% and 33% every year since 2016 \u2013 even during economic downturns, layoffs, and inflation. That\u2019s not a blip. That\u2019s a movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, one of his favorite indicators of health in the industry is the rise of six-figure freelancers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of freelancers earning over $100,000 grew by nearly 20% in the last year. That\u2019s the signal that the market is maturing \u2013 companies aren\u2019t just experimenting anymore. They\u2019re investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Barrier: \u201cWe\u2019ve Always Done It This Way\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So why aren\u2019t more big companies fully embracing the model? Matthew didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The number one blocker is always&nbsp;<em>status quo<\/em>. The simple phrase,&nbsp;<em>\u2018but we\u2019ve always done it this way,\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;is the biggest barrier to innovation<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Many enterprises still cling to the idea of ownership and control \u2013 the belief that talent needs to be \u201ctheirs\u201d to be loyal or effective. But as Matthew puts it: The best talent doesn\u2019t live 15 minutes from your office. The best talent doesn\u2019t need to be managed every second. They deliver results because they care, not because they\u2019re on payroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not risk that\u2019s holding companies back \u2013 it\u2019s comfort. And comfort rarely leads to innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk, Responsibility, and Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When companies do take the leap, one of their first concerns is compliance and risk. What happens if a freelancer makes a mistake? Matthew laughed softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing \u2013 employees make mistakes too. Agencies make mistakes. The difference is, with big suppliers, you can sue them. With individuals, you can\u2019t. So the system has to evolve.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized that today\u2019s solutions \u2013 like&nbsp;<strong>EORs (Employer of Record)<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>freelance compliance platforms<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 already solve 90% of these problems. The rest is mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything is solvable. The real question is \u2013 are you ready to let go of control and focus on outcomes instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Control to Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When I asked Matthew what the perfect system for integrating freelancers would look like, his answer was refreshingly simple: &#8220;Be ruthless about outcomes. Don\u2019t tell them what to do \u2013 tell them what success looks like.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He encouraged companies to treat freelancers like partners, not outsiders. Invite them to your Slack, bring them to your offsites, include them in the culture. Treat them like your best employees \u2013 because often, they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key, he says, is to balance trust with accountability:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Give up control, but double down on clarity. The moment you replace control with accountability, your organization becomes unstoppable.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking the Stigma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we discussed how to normalize the use of independent talent, Matthew\u2019s conviction was clear: &#8220;We have to show the wins. Growth beats everything. Tell the stories, share the results \u2013 make it visible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes that success stories \u2013 not policy debates \u2013 will drive the future adoption of freelancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a startup founder says, \u2018We scaled from 5 to 50 using fractional talent,\u2019 no one argues with that. Results speak louder than buzzwords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the wins are everywhere: from TurboTax using freelance CPAs to power its expert network, to major tech firms running multi-million-dollar programs built entirely on flexible contributors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice for Companies (and Freelancers)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what advice he\u2019d give companies just starting to work with freelancers, Matthew offered a practical, almost playful idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Find one ambitious employee in your company, give them $10,000, and tell them to spend it on freelancers or platforms. No rules. Just results. You\u2019ll be shocked at what they achieve.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And to freelancers, his advice mirrored his respect for professionalism and partnership:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Every time you deliver great work, you\u2019re not just helping your client \u2013 you\u2019re shaping how the world sees freelancers. We\u2019re all part of building this trust, one project at a time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The future of work isn\u2019t coming \u2013 it\u2019s already here. It\u2019s diverse, decentralized, and deeply human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Independent work is not a threat to employment,\u201d Matthew said in closing. \u201cIt\u2019s the evolution of it. It\u2019s about giving people freedom and giving companies flexibility.
