Look at the bigger picture <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting some <strong>perspective<\/strong> on how your business really is functioning is probably one of the most essential things you should get into the habit of doing. Some people like to do it at the end of a year with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freelancermap.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-self-evaluation\/\">freelance achievement review<\/a> \u2013 and while that might seem like an obvious task, between holiday trips and reuniting with family there is rarely enough time for a structured analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s extremely important to do this right, though. Understanding the bigger picture is how you plan the future \u2013 take real time off to do that. You need to be wholly focused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Focus on a large, daunting task you\u2019re putting off <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, we all have some of those tasks at the back of our minds. Depending on whether or not you have <strong>deadlines coming<\/strong> or <strong>personal obligations<\/strong> at home, a retreat can be anywhere from a <strong>single day to a couple of weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longer retreats are better when you have a lot on your mind and can afford the time off. But even if that\u2019s not the case, a <strong>short retreat can be better than nothing<\/strong> (and, in fact, the short duration works better for some people). Just consider what you need to get done, and how you are as an individual worker and what you can realistically accomplish in a given amount of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"location\">2# Location \u2013 Staying in your city or flying somewhere? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Where are you headed? The next town, a warm island, or a quaint little city on another continent? Any of those is a viable answer. But it obviously depends on the duration of your retreat \u2013 flying to Amsterdam might not be worth it for a single-day trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you get familiar with the place as much as you can \u2013 if you can\u2019t go there beforehand, do your research. A retreat is about <strong>taking time off<\/strong>, but you also want to <strong>accomplish things<\/strong>. Make sure you won\u2019t have to waste the first day wandering around and asking for directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"accommodation\">3# Accommodation \u2013 Luxury lodgings or budget hotels? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The question of where you should be staying during your retreat depends on if you <strong>intend to be working at that place<\/strong> as well. If you plan to spend most of the time at coffee shops or the public library, a simple, inexpensive hotel room should suffice. If you are looking for something cozier, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Airbnb<\/a>. The site is an absolute blessing for freelancers looking for a nice place to make their retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"agenda\">4# Agenda <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be fooled by the fact that this section is so low on the list \u2013 determining your agenda is one of the <strong>most important aspects<\/strong> of a freelancer retreat. If you don\u2019t have enough to do or, even worse, plan for <em>too much<\/em> work, the retreat probably won\u2019t have the desired effect. So make sure you have an agenda. Make it as granular as necessary, but not so much as to defeat the purpose of having all that free time.
