Mika Rantakeisu – Android Developer

M

Our today’s freelancer of the week comes from the hometown of Santa Claus. Mika Rantakeisu from Lapland is truly an all-round talent in the fields of mobile applications, serving all platforms from iPhone to Windows Phone but set his heart on Android. Right now, he is developing the next Google Play app hit for a Finnish company while freelancing as an Android Developer besides. Let’s meet Mika Rantakeisu, Android Wizard and freelancer from Lapland!

1) First off, can you tell us bit about yourself?
My name is Mika Rantakeisu and I’m originally from Lapland but at this moment I reside in the city of Oulu. I studied at the LAPLAND UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES in Rovaniemi. I have been in the freelancing business about two and half years by now. Before that, I worked at various positions in different companies. At this moment, I’m developing an Android application named Wimble for a Finnish company called Mekiwi Ltd.
2) If you would search for your profile on Google, which are the three keywords you would type in the search bar?
Well let me think about it, naturally first I’d type in my name, then the word freelancer and the third word would be
Android. First of all I’m an Android developer, but I also develop iPhone and Windows Phone applications.
3) What was your inspiration and when did you actually decide to become a freelancer?
I was contacted by DNA marketing chef Tomi Kaarela. He had a great idea of an application that could be a hit in Google play. At this moment, I work as a Lead Android Developer at Mekiwi Ltd. where I’m developing an Android application called Wimble. But I can also work as freelancer.
Before my freelance career, I worked with many different companies in many different roles.
4) What kind of services have your clients asked you to provide?
I possess a variety of skills for developing mobile applications. I have developed applications of all major platforms such as iPhone, Windows Phone but I am primarily an Android developer.
5) Do you use other freelancers or companies to provide skills that you don’t possess?
Well, many times I have worked with server developers to connect the mobile application to the internet. Developing servers is made with different sets of technologies then mobile applications. It is a standard issue to have a server developer developing the server side and a mobile application developer developing the mobile application.
6) Now tell us, how do you find new clients that are interested in your services?
I have a contact form in my web pages where people can contact me. Almost all my customers have come this way! At this moment I don’t use freelancing websites. But in the past, I have used webpages likes Appsero.com, Appfutura and freelancer.com.
7) What about freelancermap.com?
I just made my own profile, and I have not got any projects via freelancermap yet. But I think it is a potential channel to get freelance projects. freelancermap.com is clear and has many interesting projects and the salary what freelancer are receiving is good.
8) How do you set yourself apart from your competitors? What makes you special?
I manage all major mobile platforms (Android, iPhone, Windows Phone).
9) What are the top three books, blogs or magazines you read to stay up to date in the ITmarket?
I read a Finnish IT news site called Tivi (http://www.tivi.fi/).
10) Freestyle! Is there anything you would like to tell our readers?
It is really good idea to have an own web page. With good search engine optimization, customers will find you, not the other way around!
