People often talk about how their freelancing business is something that is fueled by passion. Following your passions and turning them into a career can make you happier, more motivated and, without a doubt, more successful. Does all that sound a bit too vague?
You’re in luck! Here at freelancermap.com, we think about passion and how it translates to work all the time. Here are five steps for turning the things you love into your career. And if you’re already a freelancer, make them a part of your current career. It’s never too late to follow your passion.
1) Identify your passion
First of all, let’s think about what passion really is. It’s something that drives you, something you’re convinced deep down inside is great and that you want to be a part of it. For me, that has always been writing. I love creating stuff, I love languages, I love intriguing words and beautiful sentences. You know what your passion is – it can be design, programming, communicating with people, drawing or a billion other things.
Again, you know what your passion is, don’t try to change the real answer. Don’t think about how realistic it is, how saturated the market for your passion is or whether others will like it. The first step is all about thinking about the things that drive you and identifying them.
2) Translate it into skills
Okay, so know that you’ve thought about the source of your passion, you can start translating it into skills. Mine was pretty easy, I will admit: If you like writing, you try to consume as much writing as you can and experiment in various directions – literary, journalistic, heck, even poetry if it’s your thing. That’s how I found out what I want to write about.
For you, it won’t be any different. Following your passion, you will find people who also share it and create stuff that you love. Think about how they create that stuff and what skills and knowledge they have in order to do that. Now start learning those skills. The great thing is that you probably already know quite a bit about them thanks to the fact that you’re pursuing your passion – a thing you love and have been interested in for a long time.

3) Let those skills flow into your career
Whether you’re starting out as a freelancer or already have an established career, injecting your passion into that professional path is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You can always expand an existing freelancing business or insert new aspects into it. Let’s say you’ve made a career of programming software, but you’ve always loved games. There’s a connection there. Once you know what drives you, try to let it flow into your business path and reap the benefits.
4) Be consistent
Consistency is key to success in any field. Thankfully, we’re not just talking about any field, we’re talking about the things you love doing. So consistency shouldn’t be a problem, right? Unfortunately, not necessarily. Don’t allow yourself to think that your passion doesn’t require attention. Don’t put it on the sidelines for too long.
5) Don’t set yourself up for disappointment
And last but not least, wanting too much is often inevitable when it comes down to following your passion. It’s a thing you’ve invested so much in. And probably imagined yourself being successful at it a million times. But remember, success doesn’t come in an instant. So give yourself the time and space required to turn what you’ve always imagined into reality. Basically, don’t overburden yourself with unrealistic expectations.
