The Human Factor, Inc.
Principal Human Factors Engineer
09.2008 - today
As a seasoned consultant in HCI Human Factors Engineering I specialize in the conceptualization, design, and evaluation of human interfaces. My capabilities center on enhancing current design practices to include a user-centered design process and designing and testing human interfaces. My clients have greatly benefited from the activities that I have performed for them including: customers and users who can efficiently complete their work tasks with greater ease, high satisfaction, less errors, and better performance.

User Experience Research: Using various knowledge elicitation techniques I identify user needs, tasks, and characteristics that feed into interface design. I also evaluate designs via heuristic evaluation, user walkthroughs, and formative/summative usability tests.

User Experience Design: Designing interfaces to meet UI standards, user goals, and user tasks.

Projects are with Rockwell Automation, Spectra Logic, DocuTAP, Dell, IBM, and Symantec.

University of Idaho
Graduate Instructor
10.2013 - 12.2013
I taught Human-Computer Interaction, a graduate level human factors psychology course, for the University of Idaho. Course topics included use models, dialogs, display design, usability, user-centered-design, software development, groupware, and multimedia. I was responsible for assigning reading and research projects, administering and grading tests and projects, and lecturing twice a week. I enjoyed teaching students very much and was invited by the U of I student chapter of HFES to be involved as an informal mentor.

Pillar Data Systems
Sr. Human Factors Engineer
11.2004 - 09.2008
In context of a full UCD process, I was tasked with setting the vision and strategy across multiple releases of Pillar storage products. As the UX lead I:

• Performed user research collaborating with architects, marketing, and executive management to plan for product requirements and features.

• Designed system management web applications for three releases of Pillar’s flagship NAS/SAN appliance the Axiom. This entailed designing hundreds of screens supporting a significant number of extremely complex features across three integrated but distinct applications.

• Across all releases conducted 30+ usability tests and informal walk-throughs with system administrators, current customers, and company sales engineers.

• Addressed input from all walk-throughs and usability tests via iterative UI design changes. Tracked and addressed usability defects with development teams.

• Managed a small team in development of a 100+ screen high fidelity VB.Net prototype.

Pillar was acquired by Oracle in 2011 and currently sells the Axiom.

The Human Factor
Sr. Human Factors Consultant
09.1991 - 11.2004
I supported 75+ teams across 10+ clients and many product lines in performing user requirements data collection and analysis, UI prototyping and design, and usability testing and field evaluation.

Software products spanned HPUX system administration, configuration management, software distribution, CASE tools, workflow/database management tools, digital camera software, and many others.

Integrated hardware and software products included an automated retail store, a military tactical training operator console and control room, tape drives, CD/DVD drives, NAS & SAN storage systems, ICB and cellular phone test devices, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and HPUX workstations.

Projects were with Pillar Data Systems, Hewlett Packard, Agilent, Zoom, the US Army, and several others.
