COMPCON ENGINEERING LLC
Company provides computer and electronic controls engineering and consulting, specializing in
cold rolling applications for the metals industry. Offerings include human-machine interface design,
sequenced machine setup, real-time process monitoring, statistical process control (SPC), and
other analytical software solutions for production control and quality improvement.
CCE also provides general computer engineering consulting services, specializing in industrial and
control system applications. We specialize in interfaces to factory-floor applications and controls.
We also provide training and service in industrial machine control applications.
Engineering duties:
Design and develop new rolling mill control systems. Design, develop and program closed-loop
servo positioning systems. Design and program interfaces to external equipment controllers.
Design and program HMI, machine control, setup sequencing, process monitoring. Program
protocols and interfaces for communicating with external controllers and processes.
Languages and Software:
C variants, Visual Basic, Wonderware, various PLC programming languages, control block and
ladder logic programming, proprietary motion control language programming. Experience with
Crystal Reports, and data-aware VB controls, including SQL-based controls.
LAN and Serial Communications:
Custom LAN communications including WinSock, NetDDE, various OPC servers including
Kepware and Matrikon, Siemens Simatic Net, Rockwell RSLinx. Experienced network engineer
with Windows, NetWare, TCP/IP. Custom serial control protocols for Thermo Scientific, ABB, GE,
Rockwell and other controllers.
Hardware:
PC/Windows, PLC (Rockwell, Siemens, GE, Automation Direct), HMI (Siemens, Automation
Direct, custom Windows touchscreen programming). Transducers and encoders for linear and
rotational position, pressure, force, load, temperature and speed.
Management/Executive:
Founder and owner of the company. Write all sales and technical proposals. Write and negotiate
contracts. Project scheduling and management. Hire and manage contractors. Schedule,
manage, and participate in system commissioning.
Other duties:
Write engineering design specs, maintenance manuals, user documentation, training materials,
and advertising copy.
Project history
I am a controls and software engineer with 35 years total experience, and 20+ years' experience in the metals industry, including with my own small LLC. I have developed Automatic Gauge Control systems, Statistical Process Control systems, and pass schedule systems. I also have general experience with machine and motion control (including servo positioning systems for hydraulic cylinders), and industrial monitoring systems.
I've worked with or consulted for companies including Bliss Salem, I2S, Hatch/IAS and T. Sendzimir Inc. American customers have included American Brass, AK Steels, Cold Metal Products, Texas Instruments, and Worthington Industries. International customers include Avesta Sheffield Specialty Strip (England), Cintacero (Mexico), Dai Yang Metals (South Korea), TATA Iron and Steel (India), Padaeng Poongsan Metals (Thailand), and Zhajiagang Pohang Iron and Steel (China).
I have recent experience with PLC and HMI, OPC including Kepware, Matrikon, SimaticNet, and Rockwell RSLinx. Programming in Microsoft C, Visual Basic and other languages, Windows as well as real time operating systems especially Intel RMX. I've designed machine-to-machine communications protocols, and written drivers to implement protocols for scales, thickness gauges, shape meters, and other intelligent devices. I've also written proprietary OS drivers as well as software and firmware that programs various LSI devices (UART, counter/timer chips, A/D and D/A converters, etc.).
I'm an experienced manager of both projects and project teams. I have run engineering departments, have hired, trained and mentored employees, and have led commissioning teams in the US as well as in Mexico, Europe, India and Southeast Asia.
I will travel and work anywhere.
I have very strong verbal and written communications skills. I've written sales proposals, technical specs, detailed engineering documentation, installation and test procedures, user manuals, and advertising copy, and have given sales presentations to American and international customers. I also have good interpersonal skills, and I'm experienced working in different cultures.
