The degree of a „Diplom Ingenieur (FH)“ gives the full professional qualification to practice as a chartered engineer. Graduates may join the German Society of Chartered Engineers (VDI) without additional requirements. Consequently, graduates have access to the chamber of engineers in all member states of the European Union.

Pursuant to a decision of the German Conference of Rectors, qualified graduates from Universities of Applied Sciences have access to doctoral studies without taken the route through the diploma of the traditional universities. This has been introduced in all state university laws.
In bilateral agreements and recommendations with several countries, graduates from Fachhochschulen are eligible for graduate studies.
According to German - U.S.-American recommendations for the placement of university graduates, holders of a degree from Universities of Applied Sciences have to be granted immediate access to graduate studies.
The same applies to Australia, where the Australian Vice Chancellor Committee and the German Conference of Rectors have agreed on a permission for graduates from Universities of Applied Sciences directly to graduate studies (advanced standind)
