Material Scientist - Micro hardness, paint adhesion and crack detection

A Material Scientist with micro hardness, paint adhesion and crack detection is required to work on a six month contract (with possibility of extension) for our Defence client based in Edinburgh.

This is an opportunity to work with a world-class advanced engineering company.

Overview of the Material Scientist contract role

The successful applicant will be part of a small team offering a technical service to a variety of Projects within a large International Defence Electronics Company. Work can arise at any stage in the life cycle of a product and from several Engineering disciplines. This necessitates a flexible approach. Applicants should have an Education to degree level in an appropriate engineering or science

Key responsibilities of the Material Scientist

An ability to complete a defect investigation at sub assembly/component level in a logical manner. This will involve good problem solving skills, to help determine the root cause and offer possible solutions. Good communication skills, both oral and written, dealing typically with Project Engineers on a daily basis. Ability to cross -over work disciplines.

The work covers a variety of subject areas and a willingness to learn on the job is therefore essential. This would involve background self-learning on relevant topics.

Expertise is required in the following; Preparation of micro-sections for subsequent microscopy Zoom-stereo, compound and digital optical microscopy.

Scanning Electron Microscopy with associated EDX analysis facility.

The expertise should be on current software driven equipment preferably from Zeiss and Oxford Instruments.

Digital Real Time X-ray imaging including interpretation.

Key skills required for the Material Scientist

Knowledge of manufacturing techniques is highly desirable. This could be from an electronic, mechanical or optical perspective. Knowledge of material testing in a lab, such as microhardness, paint adhesion and crack detection would be beneficial.

The role is based in Edinburgh - commutable from Dundee, Perth, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Stirling and Falkirk with excellent access from Glasgow
