Purpose of Role:

The Release Train Manager owns and facilitates the planning, timing and execution of delivery roadmaps and pipelines, within and across domain platforms. Their primary purpose is to align the vision, planning, and interdependencies of many teams by providing cross-team/domain synchronization of the delivery of the portfolio and domain pipeline with a focus on the continuous flow and frequent delivery of business value and enhanced customer experience. Escalates impediments, manages risks, helps assure value delivery and continuous improvement at the programme and domain level.

What does this role holder do (Accountabilities):

• Owns the development and maintenance of the release train including the preparation and review of release & environment strategy; plans & estimation; management of interdependencies; providing cross-team synchronization ensuring teams have a clear understanding of how their work helps the customer.
• Drives continuous improvement across delivery via various channels (improving or removing manual steps, enhancing the deployment and management phases of the development lifecycle) through agile coaching, proactive assessment of alternative delivery approaches and active contribution to release and environment best practice. Demonstrably improving release train agility and value to end state customers.
• Owns the management and optimisation of the flow of business value delivery of programmes using agile tools and techniques such as portfolio and value stream Kanbans and information radiators and visualisations
• Builds and communicates release calendars and iterative planning cycles and synchronises with other RTMs across domains
Leads and facilitates the planning readiness of teams by facilitating and fostering the preparation of release and sprint vision and goals and work pipelines and facilitating pre and post planning
• Aggregates the programme release objectives into value streams release objectives where they exist and publishes them for visibility and transparency
• Leads and facilitates synchronisation and dependency meeting across teams, value streams and domains
• Assists with the economic decision-making by facilitating estimation by teams and the roll up to programme and portfolio levels
• Reports status to Programme/Portfolio management and Release Management and supports related activities
• Understands and operates within the investment domain budget
• Provides input on resourcing to address bottlenecks and capacity constraints
• Attends system /solution demonstrations
• Drives continuous improvement via inspect and adapt workshops
• Supports the Value Stream/Domain/Platform Lead assess and drive the agility capability and maturity of the portfolio /value stream and programme
• Actively contribute to the organisation's better ways of working through participation in the internal and external Communities of Practice
• Creates and nurtures matrix managed teams; by being 'hands on' in the work - constantly providing insightful feedback that individuals and teams can act upon; so they know what good looks like and how they can change to improve their performance.

Risk & Control

• Comply with Our Code, all policies, 'How we manage organization', and if applicable 'How we manage our Business', and deliver against all relevant statutory, regulatory, supervisory and legal obligations
• Proactive identification and effective management and/or escalation of conduct risk to deliver key customer outcomes
• Owning, managing and supervising, within a defined risk appetite, the risks which exist in business areas and support functions
• Ensuring appropriate controls are in place to mitigate risk: balancing control, customer service and competitive advantage

Knowledge and Experience:

• The role requires expert understanding of running complex projects spanning multiple scrum and non-scrum teams
• Expert level knowledge and proficiency with scaled Agile and Prince 2 tools and methodologies spanning value stream, portfolio, programme and team levels
• Strong ability to prioritise and sequence tasks that are to be delivered by the feature teams
• Strong leadership capabilities are required along with the ability to create and share a vision in line with the organisation's
• Experience of running multiple matrix managed teams
