Description

Cost Reduction Design Engineer

To work as Design Engineering resource on Cost Reduction activities. Complete and drive general design activities such as modelling and drawing creation/modification, along with more specific cost analysis work to identify cost savings within company products and processes.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support the Cost Optimisation Manager and other members of the Cost Reduction team in the cost analysis of designed parts and advise on possible cost reductions.
  • Work with purchasing and suppliers to analyse and reduce costs.
  • Identify product and process cost reduction solutions.
  • Using 3D CAD, produce new detailed designs of cost reduced solutions and drive them through the prototype dept. or production site, to approval for implementation into live product.
  • Ensure all new solutions are designed with the highest level of DFx input.
  • Design For Cost, Manufacture, Assembly, Test, etc.
  • Work with the Cost Optimisation Manager and other members of the Cost Reduction team to keep the development of unique parts to a minimum and focus on the standardisation/rationalisation of parts where possible.
  • Issue drawings and bills of material to the factory and customers using the CAD system.
  • Work with global manufacturing on cost reduction activities.
  • Take on other tasks and projects relating to cost optimisation.
  • Work to ISO 9001 quality standards
  • Ability to thrive in a high pressure and developing environment. The ability to continuously improve standards & quality of the department.

Experience Knowledge & Skills - Essential

  • 3D CAD experience.
  • Experience of working in the engineering field.
  • Experience of working in a commercial environment.
  • HNC Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering or similar
  • Excellent problem solving skills. Shows initiative and creativity.
  • Good research skills for continuous improvement projects.
  • Good knowledge of quality systems.
  • Capable retrieving and analysing data.
  • Good business awareness (can see the bigger picture).
  • PC literate - use of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Good knowledge of materials and the supply chain.
  • Ability to understand engineering drawings.
  • Operational experience of product data management, BoM control and engineering change process.
  • Excellent product BoM cost management experience.

Desirable

  • Electrical experience is preferred
  • Degree in Mechanical and or Electrical engineering or similar
  • Experience of Unigraphics NX CAD and TeamCentre PDM/PLM tools.
  • Advanced problem solving skills (ie FMEA, Ishikawa)
  • DFx experience (Cost, Manufacture, Test)
  • Project planning and execution including reporting and risk management
  • Jig/fixture design experience.
  • Product design experience.
  • Knowledge of switchgear design.
