IFRS 9 Accountant - HSBC

This is an initial 6 month role based in Birmingham

IFRS 9 role is based within the Operational Accounting team which performs the financial control and financial/regulatory reporting functions for HSBC UK Bank plc.

HSBC UK Bank plc has a balance sheet of over £200bn, therefore it will challenge the successful candidate with its scale and complexity. At the same time it will provide an opportunity for individual to develop a broad range of skills including collaboration, financial analysis, influencing skills as well as technical application of IFRS. The role will have significant exposure to senior management.

The UK team structure is split by the SMEs for P&L, On-Balance Sheet, Off-Balance Sheet, Intercompany, Derivatives and Credit all of whom are supported by off-shore colleagues (GFC). While this role draws focus specifically to the IFRS 9 reporting, the successful candidate would also take ownership of many on-balance sheet reporting requirements as well as ah-hoc projects.

The role will require a person who can analyse complex data sets and validate that financial reporting is in line with IFRS 9 requirements and so the role holder will need a good knowledge of the various elements of IFRS 9. The work will have a particular focus on the validation of the result of impairment calculations with requirements, product system data inputs and assumptions and operation of key SOX controls. The role holder will be required to engage with the global IFRS 9 global program, Finance, Finance Change, IT, Risk and other stakeholders as required. The role will require a proactive approach who can challenge the status quo and drive through change.

IFRS 9 implementation work is being completed by the local and global IFRS 9 project teams therefore this role will work closely with the project teams in order to transition their knowledge into the financial reporting team. The jobholder might be required to work with considerable autonomy, dealing with major issues for which there is no clear cut solution while still being able to provide judgment and clear direction. The role will be supported by the wider UK reporting team as well as our off-shore colleagues.

Knowledge & Experience/Qualifications

  • Accountancy qualification (ACCA, CA)
  • Relevant banking product knowledge
  • Balance Sheet Reconciliation
  • Key SOX control knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS 9 reporting and accounting requirements
  • Experience in analysis, testing and remediation of complex data sets (MS Excel)
  • Both spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered
  • Pro-active approach to process improvement,change management and ability to challenge the status quo
