Structural Engineer/Lifting and Turning Engineer

A Structural Engineer/Lifting and Turning Engineer with Ship Building is required to work on a twelve-month contract (with the possibility of extension) for our defence client based in Cumbria.

This is a 12-month contract with a leading UK defence company.

Overview of the Structural Engineer/Lifting and Turning Engineer contract role

You will be responsible for the calculation, analyses and verification of a number of activities such as, the transport, handling and shipping of large elements of the product including assessment of large modules required in the build of a complex submarine. You will also be involved In the design of jigs from initial design through to operation ensuring equipment is fit for purpose delivering engineering solutions in accordance with a strict framework of safety.

  • Carrying out engineering analysis and verification of large and complex jigs (sizes up to 13m x 30m). Lifting and turning arrangements, transportation of large structures (weights up to 1,600 tonnes).
  • Harnessing engineering knowledge to offer support, guidance and assurance on the wide range of activities for which the department is responsible.
  • Ensuring solutions are agreed by all stakeholders and also within the team to produce a solution which considers the product from design through manufacture, operation, storage and maintenance.
  • Working with structural design codes.
  • Attending regular reviews.
  • Ensuring safety in mind at all times.Develop and draw 2D Diagrams, utilising the relevant tool-set.
  • 3D Integration within the Product Model
  • Produce other technical outputs consistent with contractual requirements
  • Provide and produce relevant calculations.
  • Produce drawing outputs from the 3D Model
  • Perform self-verification of own work
  • Cross checking of peers and subordinates work
  • Produce Process Standards

Key skills required for the Structural Engineer/Lifting and Turning Engineer

  • Degree or equivalent qualification or experience in mechanical, civil, structural engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Chartership desirable, but not essential.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the analysis of fabricated structures, Finite Element Analysis and calculations - Typically using S-Frame, ABAQUS (or equivalents).
  • Experience of verification and validation of structural engineering analysis.
  • Knowledge of, or experience of, working to structural design codes.
  • You must possess excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders at all levels.
  • You must also have the ability to influence others and provide effective solutions when dealing with conflicting requirements.

The role is based in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria - commutable from Carnforth, Milnthorpe, Lancaster, Morecambe, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven and The Lake District.
