Main Purpose

The Senior Designer is responsible for supporting and guiding a team of discipline specific Designers and assuring the quality of output is to the required standards. The role requires a good understanding of engineering and design practices as relevant to the individual's discipline and the holder must be able to demonstrate appropriate CAD competencies as well as good written and verbal communications.

This individual will be able to demonstrable success within the Oil and Gas or Marine Industries. A thorough understanding of UKCS regulatory requirements will be advantageous, and the candidate must be fully capable of providing specialist designer support within a multidisciplinary engineering team. This individual will be responsible for the quality of their deliverables and will participate within Babcock's safety, quality and design governance processes.

Significant experience in one or more of the following design areas will be essential

  • Steam Systems and boilers
  • Hydraulics (valve control) system
  • Cargo handling systems and offloading reels
  • Flare tower
  • FW/DO loading reels
  • Hawser and Mooring winches

Major Tasks and Activities

  • Main focal point for reviewing and checking of design team outputs (eg documents, reports, calculations in accordance with SQEP requirements, drawings, specifications etc.) in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Allocation of discipline tasks to allocated team of Designers.
  • Inter-discipline co-ordination.
  • Where requested, lead the development of design outputs ensuring cohesion between engineering and design functions
  • Reporting of technical progress and issues to the Engineering and Project Manager. Advise and assist in selecting the correct methods and tools for tasks and provide technical assistance to allocated team of Designers.
  • Contribute to the preparation/production of drawings in support of basic, detail and production design in line with recognised ISO standards and to the required; time, cost and quality requirements.
  • Ensure procedures, codes, standards and principles are correctly identified and applied to engineering and technical activities
  • Main discipline point of contact with professional engineering colleagues and various stakeholders ensure coordination and functionality of design, including contribution to design reviews
  • Provide a technical interface with customers and supply chain at a detailed level.
  • Within a project team act as the focal point for discipline solutions in the resolution of Technical Queries.
  • Contribute to learning from experience (LfE) requirement, during and post project.
  • Develop innovative design solutions.
  • Be aware of and ensure the implementation of safety, health and environmental requirements.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Competencies and Experience

  • HNC minimum in a relevant discipline or equivalent academic qualification and demonstrable experience
  • Completion of a recognised apprenticeship or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrate experience in leading a technical team.
  • A good understanding of engineering and design practice as relevant to individual discipline.
  • An understanding of Risk Management.
  • An understanding of Company/Departmental procedures relating to Design, Health, Safety and Environment, and Quality requirements.
  • IT literate (AutoCAD, AVEVA, FORAN, Microsoft office, etc.).
