Commissioning Section Manager

Key Technical Skills

  • Specialist operator experience/qualifications in the marine sector.
  • Ideally Educated to Engineering Degree level or hold a strong HND/HNC with the relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience in engineering leadership/management in the defence sector or related industry.
  • Technical authority in one or more recognised business areas.
  • Commercial awareness, including account construction, management of sub-contractors and risk management.
  • Practical experience in commissioning and operation of marine systems

Key Leadership/People Management Skills

  • Strong people management skills and leadership experience in a multi- disciplined engineering environment.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to senior management levels within BVT.
  • Promote coherent engineering "Best for Project" standards

Key Interpersonal/Behavioural Skills

  • Strong commitment and self-motivation; determining and successfully delivering the commissioning roles and responsibilities.
  • Monitor individual/team performance, able to recognise and manage good and poor performance.
  • Ability to deal pro-actively with customers and sub-contractors.

Key Mental/Analytical Skills and Challenges

  • The ability to generate enthusiasm, to pioneer new methods and challenge issues based on commercial applications which may involve implementing difficult decisions and cost reduction objectives.
  • Sound planning skills to overcome and adapt to change within a complex engineering environment.
  • Ability to analyse engineering system data and fault find.

Company/Industry Knowledge

  • Must have logical commissioning and ship build functional and schedule understanding to promote valued engineering and earned value management. The challenge of early delivery, target achievement and anticipation of the customers' needs will require to be demonstrated.
  • Experience in working in multiple disciple teams and cross company procedures with interaction in all elements of ship build delivery from procurement through to contract acceptance.

Qualifications

  • Ideally Educated to Engineering Degree level or hold a strong HND/HNC with the relevant engineering experience.

Top 6 Major Tasks and Activities:

  • Manage the operation of T&C safe systems of work that complies with the company's procedures on SHE legislation to ensure the safety of all personnel on-site who work on or near ship's systems.
  • Responsible to the Commissioning Manager for all the engineering issues relating to the equipment and systems under his control.
  • To drive the development, co-ordination and delivery of the test & trials programme, to the criteria stated, pro-actively engaging with suppliers to ensure they meet the requirements of the level 3 programme.
  • Management of the T&C Cost accounts, by monitoring and controlling actual spends against planned and controlling overtime.
  • Direct management and leadership in developing the team to achieve T&C business objectives.
  • Implementing processes and procedures to mitigate test and trials related programme business risks.
  • Additional Key Accountabilities:

    • Direct control and management of sub-contractors during the STW process.
    • Drive T & C milestones within scope of work to exceed performance, schedule and cost targets.
    • Provide performance information to support metrics and measures of contractual and individual performance.
    • Influence design so that the ship can be commissioned on or before time with minimal risk and maximum opportunity identified.
    • Team development and succession management of staff.
    • It is the expectation that individuals undertaking this role will be required to attend the Sea Trials of the ship during the test and commission phase. This requirement will be determined by the business and is at the business discretion.

    Key Outputs/Deliverables: Business Unit

    • Deliver the acceptance of systems and equipments through the development and execution of dynamic tests, trials integration and acceptance strategies whether to the external or internal customers.
    • Conduct and manage the platform operating requirements to successfully complete Contract Sea trial elements.
    • Manage the support services required to maintain STW activities.
