Description

We’re seeking an awesome Visual and UX Designer to join our distributed nine-person team as a U.S.-based full-time employee.

The core responsibility for this position will be to craft engaging website experiences that are both easy to use and beautiful to behold. You’ll develop ideas from vague, half-formed thoughts and rough sitemaps into wireframes, mockups, and maybe even front-end code that makes sense and inspires action. Your work may be subject to user testing and review, and you’re not only okay with that, you crave it.

Our ideal candidate is a hard-working, problem-solving self-starter who thrives working independently with little supervision, but has aptitude for team collaboration and open communication with both developers and non-developers. Since we’re a distributed shop, you’ll get to work from home, so we’d love it if you have previous experience working as part of a remote team.

In a nutshell, you’ll act as the leading creative force in our small interdisciplinary team, responsible primarily for what our stuff looks like and how it works. That means the things we’re looking for include:

  • Two or more years of experience developing wireframes and graphic/visual designs for responsive web sites and web applications.Strong knowledge of (and opinions about!) the applications used to develop these, such as Photoshop, Axure, Balsamiq, UXPin, and Sketch.
  • Ability to laugh at our stupid jokes (and the occasional good one).
  • Skills in giving and receiving design criticism (and an appreciate its importance in the creative process).
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment (think of an Aaron Sorkin TV show).
  • A passion for nonprofit (especially progressive) causes.
  • Ability to think through interactive state changes, responsivity, and their ramifications on functional requirements and development.
  • Won’t lose your s#!% if you occasionally get feedback like “can we make the logo bigger?” or “change the padding by 1px,” which may happen despite our best efforts.
  • An eye for typography, color, and visual design details — can you tell the difference between Helvetica and Arial? Or when three columns aren’t quite the same width?
  • Understanding of common project management and software development practices for user-centered and/or data-informed design processes.

  • Other stuff we’d love it if you rock, but aren’t requirements per se:
  • Experience creating, testing and refining sitemaps / information architecture for complex websites.
  • Content strategy knowledge and the ability to rock the discovery process.
  • Familiarity with WordPress.
  • Basic front-end development skills (HTML5, CSS3, and a touch of JS).
  • Ability to design in the browser, or turn static design assets into functional markup.
  • Ability to quickly find topical animated GIFs for our team amusement.
  • Remembering to un-mute yourself before talking on conference calls.
  • Swiftly digging up data that backs up your design and UI decisions.
  • A love of staying up-to-date on interaction design and tech trends and studies.
  • Willingness to take on random other duties as needed.
