Description

Beacon Hill Technologies has a 6+ month contract opportunity for a System Operations Administrator.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, provide basic services to operate and maintain core technical services according to detailed procedures. Work on Division- and University-wide projects. Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot Microsoft Windows and Redhat Linux server and storage solutions for the enterprise using high-availability architectures including fail-over clustering, network load balancing, multi-tier infrastructure topologies, storage area networks, network attached storage, and cloud storage technologies. Experience with enterprise storage solutions and experience with Cisco networking, security, and storage solutions is desired. Some knowledge of UNIX, LDAP, Oracle, SQL server, ODBC, and wireless technology is desired.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Deliver resilient, secure, highly-available, and scalable infrastructure, using knowledge and experience of current operations practices, and using modern configuration management systems.
  • Make proactive recommendations through investigation of a number of possible solutions and strategies for designing and implementing a more robust and reliable set of core technology services.
  • Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows and Linux server and storage solutions for the enterprise using high-availability architectures including fail-over clustering, network load balancing, Cloud computing, storage area networks, network attached storage, and iSCSI technologies.
  • Work with others within the department, division, and University concerning architectural options and implementation details.
  • Design and implement performance metrics and make proactive recommendations for capacity planning purposes.
  • Install, and maintain computer hardware, UPS systems, and power circuits.
  • Install, and maintain operating system software and operating system utilities.
  • Deploying, managing, and operating scalable, highly available, and fault tolerant systems in the Cloud.
  • Migrating an existing on-premises application to the Cloud.
  • Identifying appropriate use of cloud computing operational best practices.
  • Estimating cloud computing usage costs and identifying operational cost control mechanisms.
  • Manage user accounts, quotas, and access privileges.
  • Keep up to date with storage and cloud service technology.
  • Keep up to date with various Windows and Linux clustering and network load balancing solutions.
  • Serve as a contact person for Windows and Linux Servers for others within the department, division, and university as well as vendors.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for both day-to-day and emergency operations.
  • Develop and maintain thorough system documentation.
  • Field after-hours emergencies and respond as appropriate.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Licensing and Experience: Associate's degree or relevant certification and 1 year of experience OR high school diploma and 5 years of experience.

    REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Knowledge of high-availability architectures, clustering technologies, storage area network technologies, network attached storage, cloud computing and performance measurement technologies.
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language, MS Office, Google Apps, Oracle, and web integration.
  • Specific expertise with Windows 2008 or above and Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 or above operating systems in a stand-alone, domain, Active Directory environment, Windows Management Instrumentation, SNMP, and Windows Scripting.
  • Specific expertise with enterprise storage solutions is desired and moderate experience with Cisco solutions including networking, and security solutions is desired.
  • Some knowledge of UNIX, LDAP, Oracle, SQL server, ODBC, Oracle collaboration suite, MRTG, Perl, PHP, DHCP, DNS, and wireless technology is highly desired.
