Description

The Center for Artistic Activism are redesigning our website following a recently commissioned design style guide (inc. colors, logo, visual style etc). We are looking for a dynamic, creative individual or team to build us a resilient, eye-catching, easy to navigate, informative and flexible WordPress site that communicates the unique personality of our organization and the work that we do. Think Groucho Marx meets Karl Marx and you’re getting there. We combine creativity with effectiveness and we want a website that does the same.

Who we are:

The Center for Artistic Activism is a research and training institute founded as a space to explore, analyze, and strengthen connections between social activism and artistic practice. We are a very small non-profit based in the New York area, founded by Co-Directors Stephen Duncombe and Steve Lambert in 2008. The Center also employs a Projects Manager, Adam J Scarborough.

Over the the past 8 years, we have trained over 500 artists and activists in a dozen US states, 10 countries and 3 continents. In this time we have:

- Developed 4 successful training programs.
The School for Creative Activism
Art Action Academy
Imagining Utopia
The College of Tactical Culture
- Given lectures around the world and written numerous publications
- Launched a multi-stage “Æfficacy” research project on efficacy and afficacy
- Produced a podcast, “The Pop Culture Salvage Expeditions”
- Built a user-generated database of case studies, “Actipedia”
- Organized a global alumni network
- Written a book to be published in 2016
- Conducted a series of high-profile artist interviews
- Designed a tactical creativity card game
- Produced a popular bi-weekly newsletter

We need a website that makes all of this information and these resources easy to understand, access and share. We want a site that will work for us for the next 3-5 years and help us build relationships with new partners who might be interested in our trainings.

Essentially we want visitors to quickly understand what we do and how they can contact us to do it.
Our field of work has become more crowded in the past few years and our site should help solidify our position as a field-leading, field-building and field-sustaining resource for the under-recognised artistic practice of Artistic Activism. We need a website that can communicate this.

WordPress Developer Role

We commissioned a designer to re-design our logo and visual style. We are now looking for a skilled WordPress Developer to use this brief as a guide and source to customize, and populate a WP theme and plugin assets including the following:

- Consult and strategize with us on site structure and layout to meet objectives listed above
- Help us select an existing theme to use as a starting point
- Customize the theme and do further design following our design style guide
- Image placement and slider set-up
- Plugin configuration and set-up
- Ensuring full mobile and cross-browser responsiveness
- Timely work: we are looking for someone who is available and responsive
- Ability to integrate future theme updates (through use of a child theme, or other methods)
- Available for bug-fixes and updates on-going as needed
- Developed with the goal of the theme being used for the next 3-5 years

Person Specification:

- Able to consult, advise, and strategize with us to achieve objectives for the site
- Able to respond to communication, on weekdays while project is being developed, within 48 hours.
- Proficient with PHP – ideally having written or heavily customized some themes and plugins for WordPress
- Creative and can bring your own suggestions and ideas to the project
