VBA Consultant - 6 month Contract - Edinburgh

My client is located in central Edinburgh and is a global leader in commercial intelligence for a variety of industry sectors providing objective analysis and advice on assets, companies and markets, giving their clients the insight they need to make better strategic decisions.

Role Purpose

The successful candidate will work on a number of important projects involving:

  • Development and enhancement of micro-innovation projects
  • Enhance a range of existing working prototypes built using VBA (Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications) and a combination of VBScript and DOS/Win32 Shell Scripting, with advanced Microsoft Excel Ribbon User Interfaces
  • Implement highly practical solutions that automate workbooks with complex Excel formulas and workflow
  • Monitor performance of automation tools and scripts and identify opportunities for optimisation and improvement eg distributed processing, server clusters, cloud architecture
  • Interfacing office file based data sources with Databases - MS Access, MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle
  • PROTOTYPE design, coding, testing and debugging
  • Creation of tools, templates, standard operating procedures/training manuals, process documents etc.

This is a demanding and pivotal role requiring a highly capable and creative developer who can:

  • Operate independently across the prototype life cycle; through business requirements, design, development, testing & implementation, documentation and knowledge handover.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record in innovative prototyping.
  • Develop close and highly functional relationships with team members.
  • Work closely with colleagues to design and deliver high quality applications, enhancements and support services
  • Where appropriate challenge the business to ensure that requirements are clear, robust and do not negatively impact project delivery.
  • Ensure that standards are appropriately applied, and further developed where necessary
  • Support and assist colleagues by sharing knowledge and new ideas.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design, code, and test VBA toolkits
  • Plan migration/re-engineering where required into .Net
  • Identify areas for modification and improvement
  • Create adoption and verification test plans against business rules/logic

Knowledge, Sills, and Experience:

A creative mind-set and formalised and structured education in software development, design and implementation is essential for this role.

Significant knowledge and proven experience in the following technologies is critical to the success in the role:

  • Prototyping

  • SQL/SQL Server
  • SQLite
  • HTML/CSS
  • Web Services/API
  • Exposure to Agile Development Environment
  • Good understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC) and related tools
  • Experience with implementing multi-threading technologies on multicore processors
  • Experience with implementing web services in the cloud (eg Microsoft Azure, private clouds/networks, Amazon Web Services, Oracle Cloud)
