Description

Unix System Integrator/BSD Engineer

You will be working as a member of the Apex team, specialising in computer network engineering, and will undertake a variety of tasks supporting both the networks managed and maintained by Apex and associated operating infrastructure as well as supporting various projects varying in complexity from across the business.

Principle Accountabilities:

* Developing detailed configuration designs, testing, implementation and integration plans.

* Provide detailed documentation and drawings of all work under taken and all elements of system design within an existing structured change control process.

* Implementation and delivery of complex network and associated IT infrastructure solutions within a strong and detailed Information Assured environment.

* Being customer focused, and achieving customer delivery milestones.

* 3rd Line on-site out-of-band and remote in-band support into key projects and services.

* Provide support for the end-to-end deployment of convergent carrier class network services.

* Thorough investigation, including leveraging both existing and emerging technology trends, to evaluate and improve products or systems.

* Follow defined engineering good practices, internal and external, as well as defined Company policies, and procedures.

Required Skills:

* Must have 5 years plus CLI experience with BSD derived OS (eg FreeBSD),

* Must be proficient in Scripting in languages: tcsh, SQL, Perl and Python,

* Must be proficient in FreeBSD system administration,

* Must be proficient in Samba and ZFS configurations,

* Must be able to debug customised Kernel and world implementations,

* Desirable to have BSDA or BSDP qualifications, or equivalent.

Additional Key Requirements

* 2+ years' experience of working in the UK Defence Industry.

* 3+ years' experience in a production system design role.

* 8+ years' experience in a hands-on networking or IT discipline.

* Holds a valid verifiable MoD SC or DV clearance.

* Must be a UK citizen; an applicant with dual or multiple nationalities is not acceptable for this role.

* Willing to travel throughout the UK as part of the role, and holds a valid driving license.

Demonstrable and testable experience in:

* Design and implementation of Unix based system architectures.

* Experience of Kernel customisations including during the generation of a NanoBSD imaging system

* Experience with TCP/IP, PF, IPFW and multicast networking

* Knowledge of file systems such as UFS, ZFS, (and NTFS/Fuse)

* Proficient experience with the FreeBSD Ports system and additionally the following open source packages:

o Snort, Syslog-NG, Logstash, Kibana, Nagios, Elastic Search, PostgreSQL, RRDTools, SmokePing

* Experience and Knowledge with VMware products, the Poudriere project, as well as SNMP and Syslog message formats preferred.
