Description

Job Summary:

  • The Engineering Lab Technician supports the Engineering Department by performing tests on a wide range of products, as well as assisting Lab Engineers on projects for listing of both new products and variants of existing products to Regulatory agencies. This position is also responsible for the assembly of test samples, test sample instrumentation, test set-up, test execution and accurate reporting of tests results.
  • Responsibilities include the documentation relating to all test reports and results. This function also maintains calibration on all monitoring devices and measurement tools.

Description:

  • Eng lab technician will conduct design validation testing, including: Thermal, Electrical parameters, Environmental (setting up and operating environmental chambers, Rain and Sprinkler), Vibration and Photometric tests.
  • Performs tests on a wide range of products; assists Lab Engineers on projects for listing of both new products and variants of existing products to Regulatory agencies. Assembles and instruments test samples; performs test set-up, executes testing and accurately reports tests results. Maintains calibration on all monitoring devices and measurement tools.
  • Utilizes various electronic test equipment, such as meters, oscilloscopes and power supplies.
  • Experience working in an ISO 17025 accredited lab preferred.
  • PPE - hearing and eyesight protection. Job requires heavy lifting. There are no toxic chemicals or radiation hazards beyond occasional use of paint removers, glass cleaners, etc.
  • Knowledge of safe working with electricity, up to 480 VAC is required, as well as basic knowledge of ergonomics, like how to properly lift heavy packages. Training will be provided, but basic knowledge from the candidate is needed. This is one of the reasons for asking for at least one year of experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs tests including, but not limited to, thermal, rain, photometric, and vibration tests. Tests in the DAP/Satellite testing scope must be performed per UL and IEC standards.
  • Keeps appraised of and follows ISO17025 guidelines for testing labs.
  • Maintains calibration and calibration records of all monitoring devices and measurement tools in the engineering lab areas.
  • Responsible for the generation of detailed and accurate documentation relating to all test reports and results.
  • Maintains lab to ensure that a professional appearance is presented at all times and to be in compliance with safety requirements.
  • Utilizes knowledge of working safely with electricity to perform a variety of tests and experiments.

Additional Responsiblities:

  • Additional duties as assigned by Lab management.
  • May provide guidance and some supervision to less experienced Engineering Lab technicians.

Education and Experience:

  • Must have minimum - Associates/Bachelor's Degree or equivalent./Minimum: Associate's degree with an Engineering specialization. EE, Electromechanical or Instrumentation concentrations are highly desired.
  • 1-3 years professional experience. Minimum: 1 - 3 years of experience working in ISO17025 managed engineering labs. A Bachelor's degree in Engineering may substitute up to 3 years of work experience.
  • Desired: Experience testing SSL (Solid State Lighting) products.

Key Competencies/Job Skills:

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Excel and Word; LabView, Visual Basic highly desired.
  • Ability to apply basic math skills and logical thinking to daily responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Detail oriented and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong experience and knowledge of safely working with electricity (sometimes higher voltage).
  • Ability to lift test samples weighing up to 50lbs., good motor coordination skills, and the ability to read gauges and meters.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools and test and measurement devices, including: DMM's, oscilloscopes, dataloggers, digital thermometers, etc.
