6 Month Contract

Purpose of the Job:

The job holder will provide expertise in the administration of SQL databases and their environments. He/she will be responsible for the establishment, commissioning and optimisation of database environments, including database design, query performance and reporting. The job holder will take the lead in efficient and effective fault diagnosis and rectification activities involving databases. Creation, administration and maintenance of operational databases across the Group, including the web environment.

A proactive approach to issue-resolution will involve the job-holder in identifying issues and opportunities, identifying and implementing solutions to problems and keeping the company abreast of the possibilities presented by new technological advances.

The post holder will be expected to take part in an on-call system and undertake overtime as required.

Main Duties (Principal Accountabilities):

Maintain the integrity of the databases and develop the environment to keep pace with changing business demands.

Provide day-to-day administration and support database estate.

Take lead in fault diagnosis and rectification of SQL environments. This will involve working with 3rd party application support teams.

Undertake performance monitoring, tuning and capacity planning for all databases and proactively make proposals to improve performance and utilisation of resources.

Maximise up-time and optimise database server utilisation as far as is possible.

Liaise with other IT and business staff to ensure that all operational databases are meeting evolving business needs.

Ensure database environments are secure, particularly with regard to the web facing applications. Provide advice to system developers on techniques to maintain secure environments.

Work with business users to identify how to satisfy business needs using SQL server. Design and implement databases as part of a project team.

Provide advise to the Business about database development and participate in system enhancement and migration projects.

Assist in the development of queries and other database manipulation, including the import and export of data.

Undertake account administration on SQL databases.

Produce reports on a regular and ad-hoc basis as required by the Business and IT management.

Provide training to other team members, as appropriate.

There will be project work to complete, which should be done in a professional manner.

Manage any risks or controls delegated to this position as detailed in the relevant risk registers, in line with the business's risk policy

The duties listed are not exhaustive. Additional hours of work may be required, as determined by the needs of the business. Managers and staff may be required to undertake additional duties, responsibilities and projects as appropriate.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills Required:

Considerable knowledge of SQL databases and related environments. Experience in database administration and assisting developers, support staff and users in optimising database structures, sizes, queries and reports.

Excellent knowledge of, and competent in managing SQL databases in a complex corporate environment, including web based applications and clusters.

Understanding of a business-focused environment and the use of IT as a tool for delivering business priorities.

Ability to deliver real business value.

Strong desire to learn and pursue personal development in the job.

Recognised SQL DBA & other related qualifications are valued, as are other IT and related qualifications such as Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Masters qualifications in operating systems, systems engineering, application software etc.
