Description

As a Front End developer you'll be part of a multidisciplinary team working alongside other designers, Front End developers, researchers and software engineers.

You'll deliver world-class services designed for the people who use them, in line with the government's Digital Service Standard.

You'll take responsibility for the quality of code you produce.

This role is about seeing the bigger picture to help define and maintain standards. It's about making sure services are built with modern web development techniques. These will include thinking about user experience, progressive enhancement, performance, accessibility and browser compatibility.

You'll be responsible for working with software engineers to make sure the front and Back End of the service are built to the same high standards.

As a Front End developer you will:   Specialise in Front End development for digital services work with, and contribute back to, existing government frameworks

Be familiar enough with technology stacks to be able to integrate the Front End, working with software engineers and technical architects

Work with product owners, user researchers, designers, software engineers and business analysts to turn concepts into production-ready user centred services support teams to make sure services are accessible to as many people as possible

Go to user research and accessibility testing sessions use and help to maintain reusable libraries of Front End code contribute to building interaction patterns and standards, looking for common activities across services

Work with software engineers to build service front ends that are consistent in standard and quality, both internally and with the rest of GOV.UK

Take responsibility for creating and keeping up a positive and collaborative working environment contribute to building a digital culture in the department play an active part in the department's product design community

Desirable skills:

Have relevant industry experience

Have experience of building services that work and perform quickly across different devices and browsers using modern HTML, CSS and JavaScript technique, to be able to develop code for reuse and be familiar with the benefits of reuse and consistency

Be aware of Front End architecture and have experience of building the Front End in a continuous deployment environment

Have experience of cross-browser, device, automated and accessibility testing, to test, fix and remove barriers to accessibility

Have experience of working with software engineers in technical teams in complex environments

Have experience of working at pace with an agile multidisciplinary team with a usercentred design approach, explaining technical decisions and other ideas in a way that other people understand and handle constructive criticism and constructively review other people's work

Essential skills:

Have a computer-related degree

Be able to integrate Front End code with Back End systems

Be able to keep code simple and modular to allow other developers to read, follow, and understand its purpose

Have experience of working with interaction designers
