In recent years, CI/OSE4 has established a Service Build Infrastructure as a Service (BIaaS). In 2017 the service based on a self-developed solution (VMware backend) has been launched. Since then the service has enjoyed great popularity and growth has been exponential. In order to be able to scale accordingly, a completely new development of the service was started in 2018. This was based exclusively on community-based versions of open source components. In 2019 a first pilot environment with 34 physical servers and an NFS based storage system with 4 nodes was put into operation.
The service replaces distributed desktop computers as computing nodes for software builds/tests controlled by Continuous Integration with central computing resources in the data center that are shared across business units. The individual customer projects receive a virtual machine (VM) as a template VM, primarily based on a client operating system, which they equip and configure with the software required for their purpose. For continuous integration and continuous testing, BIaaS customers use a Jenkins server for control. The Jenkins server controls the software builds/tests and asks a clone of the template VM for each of these tasks. This clone is created and booted in a few seconds to a few minutes to perform exactly this one task. Afterwards the cloned VM is deleted. This procedure ensures a reproducible and non-preloaded build/test environment for each execution.
After a successful start with one pilot environment, a second environment is currently being set up and more are planned this year.
Due to the high frequency of cloning operations within this one pilot environment of about 2500 per day, there is a high error rate. This is not only limited to the self-developed source code, but also shows any vulnerabilities in the underlying OpenSource projects. This requires a profound developer knowledge for each of the OpenSource components as well as familiarity with the solution developed. Causes of bugs can usually only be found and solved in close cooperation of the different experts. Even though commercial versions with manufacturer support are available for some of the OpenSource projects, interface problems can usually not be solved and especially for exceptional cases there is usually no timely solution.
Due to the implementation and operating effort of the other environments, as well as the continuous development of necessary features, this support effort for the used OpenSource components cannot be mapped internally.
The software solution of the BIaaS service is operated and developed internally. User support is provided by the internal operations team. External software support is available for the operating team. This team analyzes software errors, security gaps, and changes in the underlying software components together with the operating team and then corrects the errors and security gaps as independently as possible and ensures compatibility with the current status of the open source components used.
