Description

Safety Engineer required to develop and support the delivery of safety artefacts to enable customer approval of safety cases and supporting contractual deliveries and safety work to support and follow-on vehicle demonstration trials and in service use.

Specifically the post holder will be responsible for:

Providing proactive safety engineering support to the programme.
Design Authorities and Role Leads in validation of existing and identification of new Hazards/Controls.
Providing proactive safety engineering support to the programme.
Critically reviewing safety, environmental and legislation (SEL) requirements and analysing the existing compliance from internal teams, suppliers and government furnished equipment/information/software.
Supporting a 'design for safety' culture within the stakeholder community and ensuring SEL requirements are used to influence engineering design.
Analysing Fault Trees, Hazard Log, Causal Events and maturity of Controls to support approval of the 'Accident-Hazard-Control-Evidence' traceability.
Supporting reviews and meetings of Hazards, Controls and supporting evidence with stakeholder community.
Collating safety evidence in support of System Safety Case development and population of DOORs and Cassandra v3.2.
Leading the delivery of physical and functional hazard compliance through engagement and the creation of the STR Hazard Analysis Reports with all the supporting evidence, arguments, strategies, goals, assumptions.
Collating safety evidence in support of System Safety Case development Lead and support reviews with stakeholder community as appropriate.

Principle duties will include:

Active engagement with the systems engineering and supplier teams to ensure safety related information is at the required level of maturity for the stage of the programme. Lead the hazard identification, hazard analysis, OSHA, OHHA, Zonal and Common Cause Analysis activities.
Develop and present ALARP justifications.
Support and review of Environmental and Legislation artefacts.
Familiar with safety analysis techniques and tools, including FMECA, FFA, FTA, ETA, GSN, hazard logs and eCassandra©.
Lifecycle management of safety artefacts and support to change process.
Supporting the definition of safety acceptance tests for equipment prior to release for trials and integration activities Interfacing with customer and supplier safety management stakeholders.
Lead and support safety working groups, safety committee meetings.
Ensure compliance with defined standards and company processes.
Providing ah-hoc safety support to emerging issues (trials, demonstrations).

The successful candidate will have the below skills:

A safety engineer with significant experience who has undertaken system safety assessments on major UK defence programmes through to certification and customer approval for use within military land system applications.
A proven extensive long term track record in the safety engineering domain and within the defence armoured fighting vehicle sector.
Experience in producing Safety Cases in accordance with DEF STAN 00-56, JSP 454 and POSMS at System level including all primary sub-systems.
Experienced in producing compelling system safety arguments.
Derivation and setting of appropriate safety criteria/requirements.
Undertaking hazard identification, hazard analysis and risk assessment to include HAZOP, SWIFT, FMEA(CA), FTA, ETA, GSN techniques.
Producing and assessing tolerability and ALARP arguments.
Producing robust safety arguments and reports.
Familiar with recognized standards and procedures including Def Stan 00-56, IEC 61508, JSP 454, POSMS, JSP 375, JSP 815 Understanding and application of safety and general purpose tool sets, eg: FaultTree+, Cassandra and MS Office tools

The successful candidate must be willing to undergo a security vetting procedure.
