Description

We're looking for a salaried full time iOS developer. You will be joining an existing team of 15 to continue building our server monitoring and systems management service, Server Density - https://www.serverdensity.com - specifically improving our existing iOS mobile app for iPhone and iPad.

Although we have a custom built office in Chiswick, West London, all our engineers currently work remotely from around the UK and Europe using tools like Hipchat, Google+, Google Hangouts and Github to collaborate. As such, you will have the choice of relocating to London or working from home wherever you are.

For this position, we are recruiting only from the UK and Western Europe. We can discuss relocation from other areas of Europe but due to complicated visa processes, are not recruiting outside of Europe generally.

What will you be working on?
Core feature development - you will be joining the existing engineering team to build product features for our customer base of developers and sysadmins. We have a long roadmap and you will get to lead development on major new functionality. This will include working on the current app as well as new, future mobile applications.

Fixing problems - you'll be expected to work with our support team to investigate and fix customer problems with the mobile apps as they’re reported.

Writing for a large audience - our technical blog receives thousands of daily uniques. You’ll have the opportunity to write about the fixes and new features you create.

Requirements:
  • You must have at least 1 year experience programming for iOS, and ideally other programming languages as well. Objective C is the obvious requirement here but we are interested in Swift, too.
  • You should have experience with mobile design, although we already have experienced designers on the team who will work with you.
  • You must be fluent in English and able/willing to communicate clearly via email and phone.
  • We will require multiple recent code samples, ideally contributions to open source projects.

  • About Server Density
  • We have several large MongoDB clusters (over 6TB SSD backed storage and 1TB RAM) which processes billions of documents every month (300TB+ in May 2014). We have a very close relationship with the MongoDB developers with many features influenced by our usage.
  • All our development is done in-house and we have extensive experience with every technology we use - no waiting for external contractors or unknown areas of our code.
  • We use various technologies depending on the job - React + Coffeescript for the web UI, Objective C for our native iPhone app, Java for our native Android app, Python for our *nix server agent and our backend services, Buildbot for automated builds and testing and C# for our Windows agent.
  • We have a service orientated architecture (now known as microservices by the cool kids) meaning all components are isolated and deployed as internal APIs with their own self contained tests, bug tracking and documentation. This helps us scale each item individually and develop functionality without the need for huge monolithic app.
  • We're design led - everything starts with how the UI looks and works to maintain our reputation for beautiful and functional interfaces.
  • Our agent source code is released under the FreeBSD open source license - we wouldn't want to install stuff on our servers where we didn't have access to the source code (even if most people will never check it).
  • Our customers range from individuals and small businesses all the way up to, charities like Greenpeace, corporations like Boeing, web hosting companies like vps.net and government organisations like the UK NHS Ambulance Service.
  • You should mention the phrase "Porcupine Tree" in your e-mail to prove you have read the whole job description.
  • We're backed by a number of leading investors with connections all around the world - UK, Europe, the US and Japan.
  • You get to pick your working hours - so long as the job is done. We work together to define reasonable deadlines and ensure everyone is available when necessary (e.g. big launches or planning discussions).
