Description

allyDVM aspires to use its proprietary software solutions to be the veterinarian’s ultimate ally. The company was founded in 2011, and we’ve already accomplished a lot.

We won the Harvard Business School MVP Competition in our first year and were granted office space in the inaugural class of residents in the Harvard University Innovation Lab.

The company has since gone entirely remote. We have people in all four US time zones, and we’re looking to add new software developers to the team as quickly as possible.

allyDVM’s core software service is focused on automating communications for sophisticated animal hospitals across the country. With no effort on the part of the veterinary practice, our software can send highly customized reminders – physical postcards, text messages, and emails – pet owners when, for example, Fluffy needs to come in for vaccines. And we do a lot more, too, like patient portals for pet health information (which pet owners can access through web and mobile apps) and so on.

allyDVM has the luxury of growth through proprietary relationships in the veterinary industry. We’ve partnered with some of the largest pharmaceutical companies and distributors in the world, and they are rolling out our software nationally – in some cases even subsidizing the cost of our software for their best accounts.

But allyDVM’s success is not entirely a result of such relationships. Our software services are already very capable in their own right and getting better every day. In fact, an exclusive group of over 700 of the most successful animal hospitals in the country recently designated allyDVM as their group’s “Preferred Provider of Client Communications Solutions.” The selection process took over a year, and our software beat out products from large, established players like Intuit.

OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW:
We need more developers to ensure we exploit these opportunities fully. We also need to continue pushing our product further and faster. Our development roadmap is clear and ambitious. We’ll be rolling out the first truly robust telemedicine solution in the veterinary industry, building industry-exclusive loyalty program capabilities into our pet-owner facing mobile apps, and much more.

But none of what we do is tech for tech’s sake. Rather, we use technology to solve real problems for real customers who pay real money for real solutions.

We have developed the core of our system with a small, highly skilled team, and need to expand (both the system and the team). This is a great opportunity to influence the direction and architecture of the product and to lead others as the team continues to grow. We work remotely, but very closely, with high interaction through video chat and persistent presence in a virtual office to cut down on isolation.

COMPENSATION:
Depends on experience and capabilities, but we can’t afford to hire any $65,000/year developers. We need experienced people far better and, therefore, MORE expensive than that. We also want someone who values equity ownership - someone who won’t be content with simply cashing checks but rather wants to see the value of his/her equity grow.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
  • 4 years programming experience
  • At least 1 year of experience in a dynamic language (Ruby, Python, Javascript, Lua, etc.)
  • Passionate about building high-quality code and well-architected solutions, not just taking orders
  • Enjoys learning new languages, libraries, and frameworks
  • When encountering a new technology or problem, must want to understand and internalize it, not just learn the bare minimum
  • Comfortable refactoring and designing entire system architectures (as opposed to isolated classes/functions)
  • Willing to work with a small, highly skilled, remote team. Have access to an environment (home or otherwise) conducive to effective/efficient work.

  • Desired:
Experience with the following technologies (or similar technology):
  • Ruby (or other dynamic language)
  • Java (or other statically typed, class based language)
  • Javascript (or other client/browser side programming language)
  • SQL
  • HTML/CSS

  • Nice to Have:
  • Experience scaling applications inside AWS
  • Scaling/Sharding a MySQL database

  • Experience with the following technologies:
  • AngularJS
  • Coffeescript
  • Javascript mobile app design (phonegap)
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Java Spring
