Description

Summary for the Mechanical Design Engineer
Conduct analytical studies on engineering proposals to deveop designs for products, including independent R&D. Work closely with Manufacturing Engineers within the business preparing CAD models, engineering drawings, production specifications and schedules, and contract modifications to ensure that customers' technical requirements are met.

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Analyse research data and proposed product specifictions to determine feasability of product proposals.
  • Liaise with research personnel to clarify and resolve problems and develop designs.
  • Prepare or direct preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawing and schematics.
  • Direct and coordinate manufacturing or building of prototype product or system and prototype development, including design through physical parts
  • Plan and develop experimental test programs.
  • Design for manufacturing
  • Analyse test data and reports to determine of design meets functional and performance specifications
  • Liaise with research and other engineering personnel and prepares design modifications as required.
  • Evaluate engineering test results for possible application to development of system or other uses.
  • Tool design and tools trials
  • Use computer assisted engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses.
  • Provide cost down and process improvement support.
  • Represent the company in meetings with customers/suppliers and conduct presentions.
  • Provide high quality technical reports.
  • Any other similar requirements as requested

Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience of design engineering including 3D modelling and engineering drawing.
  • Experience of cost down and project management.
  • Competent with managing timescales and cost budgets

Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good IT literacy and familiarity with CAD essential
  • Proficient in the use of CATIA V5 or SolidWorks is essential
  • Flexibility
  • Able to work as part of a team to tight deadlines and targets
  • Familiar and competent with GD&T principles beneficial

Qualifications
  • Engineering Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, or relevant Engineering discipline
