Rate: £30 p/h

Role: Quality Engineer

Purpose

Reporting to the Continuous Improvement Manager, the Quality Engineer will identify and implement process improvements and demonstrate control of manufacturing processes using a statistical and analytical methodology. Through the rigorous application of this approach we will significantly improve the reliability and manufacturing consistency of what we produce. The Quality Engineer will also be responsible for both the verification and validation of new products (whether designed in house or for sub contract manufacture customers), new processes or new equipment/technologies. The incumbent will define and undertake these validation tasks identifying which parameters to measure, how they are measured based upon the level of accuracy required.

Responsibilities
  • To develop and monitor manufacturing quality control plans and furthermore to use them in the identification of process improvements that lead to enhancements of product quality, improved manufacturing efficiencies or product cost reduction.
  • Responsible for the validation and verification of existing and new manufacturing processes, equipment or products. Producing technical reports to support process changes.
  • In conjunction with the Process Engineering department develop and recommend the most appropriate method of inspection/measuring equipment for specific applications.
  • Be competent to generate inspection programs. Identify and assess new developments in inspection technology
  • Ensuring any new measuring equipment is calibratedvalidated and meets all quality requirements.
  • Recommendation of product reworks, concession and scrap disposal in accordance with the Non-Conformance Reporting System.
  • Prepare reports for quarterly Nonconforming Product Review particularly on scrap trends.
  • Authorisation of company scrap disposal where the quantity is less than 10% of the works.
  • Working with Cell Team Leaders and Production Engineering to identify product problems via root cause analysis and implementing subsequent corrective actions. Confirm that that action to prevent recurrence has been effective through continual monitoring.
  • To either work autonomously or as part of a project team.
  • Ensure all changes are communicated to all relevant departments in a timely manner, providing training where necessary.


Competencies and personal requirements
  • Able to demonstrate an extensive and in depth understanding of measuring and inspection techniques ideally relevant to the medical/orthopaedics sector. Understanding the appropriate accuracy/applicability of the types of measurement required for any specific purpose, including SPC and minitab
  • In all likelihood will have a minimum of an HND in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Totally conversant with ISO9001.
  • Knowledge and experience of process validation
  • Lean/continuous improvement knowledge and experience is highly preferable.
  • Must be a methodical thinker with an eye for detail.
  • Good communicator.
  • Takes initiative, is self-directed and will seek out answers to required information.
