Description

Senior System Engineer required to work as part of a team to support the initial development phase of an update to a communication system.

The role will involve the development of solutions for new/updated capability being introduced that will include new data terminal hardware and operating systems, updated User applications, enhancements to network protocols and tactical radios, and system management. Whilst the role is predominantly to undertake system design/documentation tasks to enable a system design review, the successful candidate will be expected to get involved with prototyping and systems integration to inform/validate design work.

Typical activities will include:
Development and documentation of System/Subsystem Designs derived from the System Requirements Specifications using Artisan UML modelling tool.
Derive equipment specifications and interface specifications using DOORS requirements management tool.
Work with the Customer and Users to clarify requirements and agree designs/solutions to satisfy those requirements.
Undertake analysis of design changes to confirm feasibility and impacts on the system to inform implementation decisions and product selection.
Work with specialist and support engineering groups (including security, safety, ILS, human factors) as required to validate designs with system impacts considered.
Management of subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of compliant designs and product updates.
Accurate and timely reporting of progress and escalation of issues to Programme and Engineering management.
Present outputs of work, conclusions and recommendations at internal and Customer design reviews.
Responsible for time management ensuring work outputs delivered to agreed schedule.
Present and demonstrate aspects of engineering release software and design to relevant Customer representatives and Users to gain feedback on the development activities and support future improvements.
Oversee and contribute to integration and testing activities on prototype solutions to validate designs and ensure compliance with requirements.
The successful candidate will have the below skills:
Experienced in delivery of computing hardware for military applications including qualification to defence standards and platform integration.
Microsoft Windows Platform development experience including good understanding of Windows architecture, services, and security features, Familiarity with computer BIOS/UEFI design and configuration.
Good understanding of the OSI-layered communications model.
Broad understanding of messaging and routing protocols, TCP/IP, UDP, including those applicable to wireless (as well as wired) environments.
Familiarity with tactical network infrastructures including networks, radios and system management considerations.
Familiarity with time protocols including NTPv4.
Knowledge of security processes and controls for secure military systems.
Knowledge of safety-related aspects of engineering, including SIL.
Knowledge of Human Factors processes and techniques.
Systems integration experience, including knowledge of test planning, test script generation, formal testing processes.
Familiarity with HPQC software.
Experience debugging system integration issues in target environments.
Familiarity with setup and configuration of computing hardware devices, including computers, Routers and Switches.
Candidates must be willing to undergo a security vetting procedure.
