Description
Main Activities and Responsibilities:
- To support the Principal Officer and other team members by applying analytical techniques to understand and interpret a wide range of information as required, producing tactical intelligence products in line with the appropriate methodologies, To identify and develop a wide range of information sources (open and closed) regarding incidents relating to consumer/business detriment and further identify gaps in current knowledge and understanding of the specific problems causing consumer/business detriment in the area of product safety.
- Conduct the analysis of and/or analyse problems and issues to develop reports and briefings ensuring that hypotheses are developed and inferences made.
- To maintain detailed records for the provision of statistics as required by the Accountable Body (within legal boundaries of Data Protection law and the rules of criminal investigation).
- To support the data inputting function by operating and maintaining information technology and other equipment to maintain the integrity and security of procedures, records and appropriate documentation.
- To promote the analyst function and the policies and initiatives of the SPoC function and occasionally provide training to other staff/trainees from partner agencies as/when required within relevant subject areas.
- Work as part of a team to deliver intelligence products and identify intelligence gaps whilst carrying out analysis.
- To liaise with partners across the regulatory, statutory, and businesses sectors to ensure effective intelligence gathering and dissemination.
- To attend relevant national, regional or local groups of interest as required.
- To support the team through assisting with risk assessing and processing of import documentation to inform border controls and interventions at UK border points
- To ensure effective liaison and cooperation, where relevant and appropriate, with the National Trading Standards Intelligence Team
Current Objectives for the SPoC team
- To be a coordinating body and centre of excellence in intelligence and border controls in support of product safety objectives.
- To facilitate the work of regional authorities working at UK border points by providing effective intelligence products
- To ensure that regional and national enforcement networks develop to foster improved response to 'Trading Standards' crimes/incidents.
- To provide effective support to drive forward the work of the National Trading Standards SPoC team
- To support the work of non-Trading Standards Market Surveillance Authorities in the field of product safety and border controls
- To be a centre of excellence in border controls and therefore provided expert guidance at National and EU level

Education & Qualifications
- A high standard of learning in intelligence research and/or analytical techniques, preferably qualified to degree standards or equivalent vocational/educational qualifications
- Professional qualifications in Intelligence Analysis eg NIAT
- Qualified in the use of i2 Analyst products and/or Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel
- Proficient in the use of i2 Analyst products and in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel.
- Professional knowledge in Intelligence Analysis
- Theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge in intelligence gathering and dissemination.
- Strong problem solving, analytical and decision making skills with the ability to make informed decisions and/or recommendations based upon available intelligence and information.
- Skilled in the use of standard software packages including Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, etc)
- An ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation in respect of intelligence and information gathering and dissemination
- Ability to analyse complex data and draw conclusions
- Ability to work under pressure against tight deadlines
- Proven ability to respond to internal and external pressures of the job including complex customer concerns.
- Proven ability of ensuring that deadlines are met, targets are achieved and work is prioritised accordingly
- An ability to develop, influence and implement systems and procedures to ensure that personal and team objectives are met
- Good oral and written communications skills
- Strong team player, committed to an ethos of continuous improvement
- Ability to present materials to senior staff and a range of audiences through written and verbal communication

- Flexible approach to work by responding to the needs of the service including, at times, requirements to work beyond normal working hours
- Police Vetting to NPPV2 will be required for this post.
