Project Overview:
The Learning Lab team is looking to hire 1 Instructional Designer to aid in content creation and curation for our CS First (g.co/csfirst) and Applied Digital Skills (g.co/applieddigitalskills) programs in Charleston, South Carolina. This person will write educational content centered around a kids programming language, Scratch MIT (scratch.mit.edu) used by the CS First program. The CS First program targets students between 3rd and 8th grade.
Overall Responsibilities:
The Instructional Designer will also have the opportunity to observe CS First and Applied Digital Skills programs taught during the school day so that they can better understand the target audience they are writing for.The CS First team is looking for an Instructional Designer to write content around key marketing campaigns like back to school in August and Hour of Code in December. The CS First team creates targeted materials for teachers so that coding is more accessible to students.
This person will also write content for Applied Digital Skills related to Google Applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) that includes lesson plans, video scripts, and online instructions for high school and continuing education students.
Superb writing and editing skills are necessary for this position, along with the ability to multi-task, locate relevant information online and work within deadlines. The position will involve writing, editing, manipulating and paraphrasing existing content.
Daily Responsibilities:
Create, edit, review, and modify educational materials, like: video scripts, lesson plans, support materials (help center articles, closed captions, website pages, etc.), and provide feedback on videos (but not produce them).
Required Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Communications, English, Marketing, Journalism or similar field
- 3+ years previous experience in technical writing/content creation with a portfolio of work
- Knowledge of and familiarity with drag and drop programming languages like MIT Scratch or Blockly
- Experience working a curriculum development team.
- Familiarity with technology education.
- Interest or passion in diversity, and/or educational access and equity.
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Comfort and tolerance for ambiguity-- willing to work on problems that aren't neatly defined
- Self directed, able to perform tasks without a great deal of supervision
- Ability to work within strict deadlines
- Break large problems into actionable pieces for novices to understand
- Create or adapt existing processes to complete a task
- Communicate to or with different audiences
Nice to Have Skills/Not Required:
- Teaching experience
- No previous programming experience is required, however a willingness to learn introductory programming is required.
