About the role:
In this role you will be the leading user-centred design practitioner for a significant programme of work or end-to-end service, providing user-centred design expertise and leadership for multiple delivery teams.
Design Leads ensure their teams design intuitive, inclusive, user-focussed products and services. They maintain an overview of the work taking place, and prioritise and direct the work of designers, content designers and user researchers to deliver the most value and impact. They play a key role in building user-centred design culture and expertise and embedding design skills and service standards.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day work of around 10-15 designers, content designers and user researchers. You will be an integral part of the senior leadership team for the programme of work. You will need to work flexibly balancing strategic thinking and operational transformation, with day-to-day leadership of the user-centred design practitioners in your teams.
Design leads:
- set the overall design direction and desired user experience for the service
- are accountable for whether the design of the service and products meets user needs
- scope and shape the work to be done, direct the work of user-centred design practitioners in their teams, and assure overall design quality
- collaborate with senior leaders on their programme to prioritise the work of designers and user researchers to ensure it delivers most value and impact
- influence operational design, leading how it is implemented in design team practice
- help ensure that designers, content designers and user researchers have the right conditions and environment to thrive
- help senior leaders and team members from other professions take a user-centric approach and support them in increasing their knowledge and understanding of user-centred design
- collaborate with the Head of Service & Interaction Design, Head of Content Design, and Head of User Research to provide vision and leadership for the overall user-centred design profession
- contribute to effective recruitment and demand and resource planning, in collaboration with heads of profession and delivery managers
- provide line management, career and skills mentoring to other designers and user researchers
Design Leads also play a key role in ensuring our services are design and customer led, embedding design skills, service standards across a wide portfolio of services through:
- using their specialist skills to demonstrate best practice and to coach and mentor teams
- engaging with designers, user researcher
