SC Cleared* Senior Commercial Officer - Defence Projects - Contract Role

Description of project: 

The successful applicants will be part of the Company's commercial contract management team for a large scale defence contract, and be responsible for maintaining the contractual integrity and legal compliance of the agreements, for maintaining and building the customer relationships, for preparing and negotiating bids for new parcels of work, dealing with all aspects of risk, issuing variations to change orders, for identifying and managing all aspects of risk, advising and managing claims, and will be expected to generate innovative commercial solutions that will enhance the delivery and management process.

Job purpose & accountabilities: 

To be the contract manager on a very large and complex multi-year multi-million pound customer contract and manage the contract and associated peripheral agreements

Role will be instrumental in supporting business development opportunities as well as securing our commercial position through transition, transformation and into BAU. The successful applicant will be part of the large scale defence Contract Management team responsible and accountable for the success of the commercial elements of the large scale defence programme

Skills mandatory:

  • 5 years plus Commercial/Contract experience. Proven track record of contract management, negotiation, disputes/mediation, drafting and strong relationship background.
  • Strong commercial and business awareness together with detailed experience in complex contract management including diligent document control, reporting, drafting and preparation of claims and/or variations
  • Practical experience developing business proposals with the focus on developing attractive and compelling commercial agreements
  • Demonstrable ability to successfully conduct commercial contractual negotiations with Customers and Partners at both project and senior levels
  • Profound understanding of contract law, business accounts, accounting practices as well as current British and European legal frameworks and service/outsourcing contracts
  • Strong commercial acumen with the drive to succeed to achieve outstanding results
  • Comfortable in applying relevant tools and techniques to support decisions and thinking creatively about problems and problem solving solutions
  • Experienced in instilling a culture of collaboration and leading by example in actions, delivery and behaviours
  • Team leadership and management experience
  • Experience of working within UK defence and/or national security industries.
  • Willingness to be vetted by UK Government to the highest levels

Skills useful: 

  • Experience of technology contracts within the defence and/or national security industries.

Skills on the job: 

  • Proactive strong commercial management, ability to deal with confrontation and help resolve or manage to a successful outcome for the Company.
  • In-life management of commercial and contractual relationships with customers, partners, and suppliers (via Procurement), including conducting negotiations, issue/problem resolution Implementation of Contract management tools and procedures (including Obligation, Documentation and Change Management and Contract Awareness) to projects, so that commercial control is maintained throughout the projects' lifetime
  • Leadership in the provision of commercial and contractual direction, evaluation of Variation Orders and associated contract amendments
  • Management of the Risks and Opportunities Process and Database in conjunction with Operations
  • Training, mentoring and influencing other community and wider team members
  • Positively lead compliance with our internal directives, guidelines, procedures and policies as regards commercial practice in Project Execution
