Job purpose

The Storage Specialist is responsible for the design, implementation and administration of all new and retained production, test and development environments.

The role will also work alongside the trusted partner to deliver the Storage and Backup services, reporting into the Storage & Backup Manager.

The role requires daily involvement in Change Management, Performance Management, Capacity Management, Security Management, Compliance and Governance as well as 3rd line technical escalation for incidents and problems.

The Storage Specialist will work with projects to design, build and review new storage technology and review work carried out by trusted partners.

The role also requires participation in a call-out rota for P2, P1 and MSO incidents.

Key Accountabilities

Provide technical capability, support and maintenance for the Storage based platforms and processes across the LG group including the delivery and documentation of the following:

  • Escalated on-call 24x7x365 support
  • Operational, initiative and project based activities
  • Capacity and availability management
  • Performance management
  • Obsolescence management
  • Patch and vulnerability management
  • Technical design and implementation
  • Licence & Vendor management
  • Backup & Disaster recovery management/capability
  • Storage and SAN security and hardening
  • Audit & Compliance
  • Provide key input into solution design, strategy & roadmaps
  • Resource management, covering both permanent & contract resource (on & offshore).

Knowledge & Experience

Preferred education/qualifications:

  • Degree level or equivalent in technical disciplines

Specific Responsibilities:

Operational:

  • Manage high priority incidents (P2/P1/MSO) through to service restoration
  • Attend Post Incident Review meetings providing meaningful feedback on actions
  • Manage all incidents and changes related to retained storage services
  • Work with Security and Control team to ensure Storage technology adheres to regulatory compliance
  • Conduct storage performance and capacity management
  • Carry out regular reviews and updates to Storage/Backup processes and standards
  • Engage with customers to help improve their service

Projects:

  • Provide storage design and consultation for projects including attending architectural meetings and approving proposed solution
  • Attend all relevant project meetings requiring storage technology
  • Work with the Solution Architects, IT Project Managers, Technical Delivery Manager and System Integrators utilising the LG delivery framework to:
    • Assess the design and feedback to the Storage Manager for approval.
    • Ensure designs comply with current Storage standards and policies.
  • Highlight, document and inform the Storage Security and Control team of any risks
  • Obtain regular updates from the trusted partner on project progress
  • Report delivery status of all projects to the Storage Manager
  • Escalate all issues to the Storage Manager as required

Service Improvements:

  • Assume responsibility for the delivery of continual service improvements as directed by the Storage Manager
  • Maintain knowledge of new and emerging technologies that might have application in LG, with a focus on new Storage and Backup features and best practice in Storage administration
  • Mitigate risk by identifying obsolescent technology within the storage estate and work with Storage Manager to implement upgraded solutions
  • Work with the Security & Control team to assess, plan and deploy security and functional storage patches across all technologies and editions

Specific Skills & Abilities:

  • Expert experience of core storage and SAN technology products so that this role can act as a technical consultant.
    • HPe 3PAR
    • NetApp
    • HDS (Hitachi Data Storage)
    • EMC VNX/VMAX
    • Brocade & Cisco SAN Switch technology
  • Thorough practical and theoretical knowledge Storage technologies (Block/File/Object)
  • Experience managing site-to-site disaster solutions.
  • Understanding of the telecoms and media business sector
  • Relevant industry experience in an operational environment
  • Proven track record of managing multiple complex project deliveries simultaneously.
