Electrical Designer x 2 - Military Vehicles

An Electrical Designer with Military Vehicles experience is required to work on a twelve-month contract (with the possibility of extension) for our defence client based in Washington.

This is a 12-month contract with a leading UK defence company.

Overview of the Electrical Designer contract role

This role will involve working on fast paced prototype programmes related to major platform contracts. As an Electrical Designer, your specific role will focus on the design, integration, test and build of electrical equipment and systems at platform level, in order to deliver high performing products within wider project timescales.

  • Development of design material, drawings and engineering calculations for the electrical installation of armoured fighting vehicle subsystems including:
  • Design specifications.
  • Single line/block diagrams.
  • System wiring diagrams.
  • Schematic diagrams.
  • Harness design drawings.
  • EMC bonding diagrams.
  • Electrical installation drawings.
    • Generation and maintenance of power budgets for 28V DC vehicle subsystems.
    • Development of vehicle based electrical power generation, conversion and distribution.
    • Application of Defence Standards for design of electrical equipment; Def Stans 23-09, 61-05 and 59-411.
    • Preparation of harness design specifications, component selection and supplier liaison.
    • Liaison with other functional departments, team members, and partners.
    • Development and conduct of test/trials plans and procedures.
    • Consideration of safety, risk, reliability and maintainability associated with the technical solution, in conjunction with subject matter experts.

    Key skills required for the Electrical Designer

    • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline with extensive postgraduate experience within an engineering environment.
    • Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Be self-motivated and be able to work with the minimum of supervision within a team environment.
    • Competent in the following software packages:
  • Microsoft office, including Microsoft Visio to produce schematics and diagrams.
  • Product Lifecycle Management tools such as TeamCenter.
  • Good awareness of:

  • Security implications for technical material.
  • Commercial considerations.
  • Workplace Health and Safety.
    • Remote working will be possible, with a reasonable amount of travel to support engagement with the wider team/product.

    Highly Desirable

    • Experience of either automotive, or suspension or tracked vehicle systems.
    • Experience of Military Vehicle Wiring Harness Design.
    • Knowledge of BS:8888 Drawing Standards.
    • Knowledge of BS/ISO 14617 Symbols for Schematic design.
    • Familiarity with harness manufacturing standards eg IPC/WHMA-A-620.
