Description

We are working with The UKSBS - Science and Technology Facilities Council to find a senior engineer: To lead and manage the resources to deliver engineering outputs to enhance capability and reputation; and to maintain standards and improve the quality of it's products, services and advice to customers. To lead and influence the development of work plans, including identification of improvements to systems, capabilities and/or process. To use existing and emerging engineering practice to lead the delivery of the work plans, which improve systems and products and provide advice and services for the benefit of customers.

In a major expansion of its already broad portfolio of work, the MMTG is pursuing a very substantial technical development and supply activity in support of the MetOp Second Generation (MetOp-SG) series of Earth observation satellites. MetOp-SG will deliver complex multi-wavelength instrument payloads into low Earth orbit via a series of repeat satellite deployments to be initiated in 2021. Each satellite will monitor the Earth's climate and weather within a range of well-defined wavelengths and a sequenced launch approach will ensure operational continuity of European meteorological forecasting through to 2050. In support of the above, the MMTG is leading a European consortium tasked with providing sensitive, space-compliant and state-of-the-art millimetre-wave receiver front-ends that form the critical MetOp-SG Microwave Sounder (MWS), Microwave Imager (MWI) and Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) sub-payloads.

The candidate will be expected to work with the project management team and the technical team including assembly and production engineering staff. He/she will also be expected to report to project technical and administrative management as required and to make judgement calls regarding prioritisation. Thus, an attention to detail and high level of communication and documentation skills are required for this role, which is pivotal in ensuring the delivery of state-of-the-art technology to project related RAL Space customers and a fleet of future Earth observing satellites.

The main activities that the successful candidate will be expected to perform are as follows. Plan and track production activities including mechanical manufacturing, assembly of RF modules including waveguide and PCB modules, RF testing at module and receiver-level, qualification testing at external test houses (eg EMC & ESD), and Lot Acceptance Testing. Inform the Project Manager of resource conflicts or over-allocations and identify impact and possible mitigation strategies, to include additional resource if required. Plan required equipment maintenance to minimise schedule impact. Schedule test activities with external test providers (EMC, ESD, mechanical). Plan in-house production activities making optimal use of available resource using detailed MS Project plans. Adapt production priorities in response to Project Management requirements. Provide current production schedule milestone information to the Project Scheduler Any other Relevant Information The post holder may be expected to undertake occasional national and international travel to customer and partner locations within the UK and Europe in support of related project meetings.

Experience Required

Essential. Two or more years experience in a Production Management role in a manufacturing environment. Experience in use of Microsoft Project to plan and manage production activities and resources. Good attention to detail. Good organisational abilities. Fluent English spoken and written. Ability to communicate at all levels. Comfortable in a customer-facing role Desirable. Experience of working in a space/aerospace production environment. Experience/knowledge of electronics/RF equipment production. Experience of working in a clean room and Microwave Sounder (MWS), Microwave Imager (MWI) and Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) sub-payloads.

IN scope: Please note that the client has determined that the off-payroll working rules will apply to this assignment and where a worker elects to provide their services through an intermediary (such as a personal services company) then income tax and primary national insurance contributions will be deducted at source from any payments made to the intermediary.
