Description

You should boast the ability to build effective relationships and use them to influence others and negotiate diplomatically. In addition, you'll need to demonstrate you have the confidence and ability to deal with senior officials, Ministers and special advisers, and are adept managing your team's workload and delivering under pressure.

That is because our SIOs are at the forefront of delivering media handling around the MOJ's extremely busy policy agenda, including: reforming prisons, probation and youth justice to improve public safety and reduce re-offending; undertaking the biggest programme of courts modernisation anywhere in the world; reforming our human rights framework; and securing Britain's status as a leading centre for international law as we leave the EU.

About External Communications

You should be comfortable with regular face to face contact with Ministers and SpAds and confidently provide them with proactive media handling advice on announcements, visits and speeches. You will manage a team that manages media facilities, organises interviews, drafts sharp reactive statements and briefs journalists in order to generate and influence our coverage.

The exact balance of responsibilities will depend on the role, however, you will be expected to:

  • Manage a modern media team in developing proactive longer-term handling strategies that set the agenda across the full range of channels.
  • Provide regular media handling advice on policy briefs to the Secretary of State, Ministers, senior officials and colleagues on sensitive, complex and high profile issues.
  • Support Newsdesk in anticipating and spotting breaking news stories and manage your team to issue swift, robust and appropriate responses at short notice and under pressure.
  • Have personal impact in the full range of press office work from briefing journalists to advising ministers face to face.
  • Use the full range of channels in promoting our priorities, maximising digital tools and using relevant insight to get the best possible results.
  • Provide support and direction to your team, with particular attention to their learning and development.
  • Play a full part in being a Senior Press Officer and part of the office management team.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Ministers, private offices, special advisers, senior officials, journalists, stakeholders and OGDs.
  • Work effectively with the wider press office team and with communications colleagues in all disciplines across the department, so that press handling plans are joined up with wider communications strategies.
  • Understand departmental and Ministerial priorities so you can communicate key messages clearly, accurately and creatively to media.
