Description:

The Project Engineer provides support or leadership in the development of the technical solution to meet the customer capability needs. They ensure that the solution is successfully integrated into the current enterprise whilst managing and minimising negative impacts. They seek to apply engineering best practice and ensure that all stakeholders are effectively managed throughout the engineering activities. They involve specialists as required and actively consider performance, safety and quality implications before making decisions.

Ensure that performance, time, cost, risk and safety factors are taken into consideration when making technical decisions.

Discuss and agree system design solutions with Suppliers and ensure that the inherent technical risks associated with them are understood and managed.

Ensure the solution integrates into defence and manage the system boundaries and interfaces by identifying, engaging and managing specialists as required.

Follow all applicable engineering standards, legisaltion, policy and guidance, ensuring that where there is deviation, the impact understood, planned and managed.

Specify the technical and integration aspects in contracts

Specify the technical and integration aspects in the Through Life Management Plan (TLMP) ensuring that all Defence Lines of Development (DLoDs) are addressed.

Work with the Project Manager and other engineers to identify the technical stakeholders and ensure that they are identified, engaged and managed throughout the engineering activities.

Task Background

  • The area of work covers support to military aircraft mission systems research and development, addressing areas including obsolescence management; scalable software open architectures; information assurance, airworthiness and safety certification; integration; adaptability and flexibility; and future growth.
  • The role primarily supports the research and development of air systems including unmanned, and involves supporting and advising industry activity; coordination and support to the Dstl programme; formulation of requirements; and the coordination of multiple stakeholders.
  • This work contributes to the future development and procurement of capable and adaptable military aircraft including Unmanned Air Systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The role will involve working as part of an integrated, cross-discipline team which will be responsible for the day-to-day liaison with industry research teams.
  • The role will entail responsibility for reviewing technical outputs from industry, and determining whether proposed approaches and outputs will meet project objectives.
  • During execution phases of research projects, the role will entail the provision of support and advice to the Dstl/MoD team to enable the successful management of those projects. This will include supporting the provision of GFX, advising the MoD/Dstl Team on technical progress against the plan, organising formal reviews, technical management of defence contractors and industry, providing direction and technical advice to the industry team, and reviewing formal and informal outputs and deliverables.
  • The role will also involve responsibility for monitoring identified risks, as well as identifying and escalating technical risks to the Dstl task lead.
  • The role will be based at the Dstl Portsdown West site, but will involve regular travel to other Government and Industry sites in the UK. The role may also include occasional overseas travel.

Experience Required

Experience:

  • Leading complex Military Avionics/Mission Systems tasks, including design; qualification; and safety/design reviews etc.
  • Working in cross-discipline civilian/military teams.
  • Working on military systems.
  • Setting and evaluating Software requirements.
  • Awareness of operational employment of aircraft including unmanned.
  • Working within a UK MOD Acquisition programme, including experience of MOD processes, defence contractors and the UK defence market.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Model Based Systems Engineering processes and tools.
  • Safety Certification (including RTCA DO-178C) and/or Security Accreditation.
  • Software design and engineering process.
  • Service oriented architectures.
  • Data models.
  • Integration of software based systems onto aircraft and test environments.
