Job description/Person specification:

QinetiQ have a requirement for an Instrumentation Engineer to work within the Controls, Systems and Instrumentation Group at QinetiQ. The role would be primarily based at QinetiQ Haslar, Gosport, but it is desirable for joined support to the Five Metre Wind Tunnel at QinetiQ Farnborough. There also may be opportunities for work across other QinetiQ sites during certain projects.

You will be part of a small team responsible for the delivery of work packages for the Hydrodynamic, Maritime Life Support and Commercial groups within QinetiQ. This will involve instrumenting large scale model boats and submarines.

Main Duties:

  • Provide Instrumentation support to the Haslar facilities, reporting to the Controls Systems South Team Leader
  • Leading/assisting in instrumentation tasks and activities
  • Assembling and maintaining instrumentation setups for use in scale model trials (eg scale models of surface ships), which includes calibrations and maintenance of a variety of different transducers, installation of DC electrical systems, setup of AC Power Drive Systems, setup of both software for specific transducers and software for use in trials themselves (eg acquisition and control software).
  • Setup and maintenance of certain facility related control and instrumentation hardware.
  • Calibration of data acquisition and sensors
  • Maintenance of electrical + electronic equipment, and Portable Appliance Testing
  • Liaising with other parts of the delivery team to ensure the timely delivery of instrumentation support for trials
  • Assist in providing and delivering the strategy for developing and maintaining the instrumentation and software used within the model instrumentation capability (includes research and development)

Requirements of the role:

  • Educated to minimum of ONC level in Electrical/Electronic engineering or equivalent, preferably an HNC.
  • Knowledge of basic instrumentation and control setups, including transducers, actuators, control methods.
  • Experience of DC circuits such as those used in small vehicles, in particular boats and other electric vehicles.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation hardware, electronics and electrical in general is expected but training will be provided where required.
  • A strong and demonstrated ability to work 'hands-on' from first principles to safely diagnose electrical and electronic issues (to board level only) and implement prompt, effective and safe repair schemes.
  • Ability to interpret Electronic and Electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of maintenance principles.
  • Be literate with the operation of computers and common software packages, in particular basic operating knowledge of Microsoft office Word and Excel (training could be provided).
  • Eligible for full security clearance.

Advantageous, but not required (as training can be provided):

  • Knowledge and experience in the calibration of transducers.
  • Knowledge and experience of AC and DC power drive systems.
  • Knowledge and experience of distributed control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience of closed loop control systems.
  • Experience in using the National Instruments LABVIEW development environment.
  • Ability to use Electronic/Electrical drawing packages such as ORCAD, Autocad electrical/Solidworks electrical, schematic capture tools (Visio).
  • Knowledge and experience of planned maintenance systems.
