Function:

DPA Expert for Backup and Restore Service Line/Architecture and Infrastructure Services (A&IS)

POSITION PURPOSE:

The DPA SME/L4 Engineering role is the primary technical interface working with service line personnel and other business partners in identifying, troubleshooting, resolving backup infrastructure reporting issues and developing and publishing new backup performance reports. The DPA L4 Engineer is responsible for the successful end-to-end deployment, maintenance and monitoring of the DPA production environment.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Utilizes previous experience with DPA to use tool to deliver new functionality to the service in the areas of backup monitoring, alerting and reporting.
  • Provides senior-level support on the DPA reporting tool in a multi-backup application and infrastructure environment. This is includes but is not limited to TSM, NetBackup, Backup Exec (virtual and physical implementations), HP/DP, Avamar, IBM Tape Libraries, EMC Data Domains and Veritas NetBackup appliances.
  • Recommends and implements best practices as it relates to DPA maintenance and backup performance reporting. This includes but is not limited to backup and restore performance, appliance based storage capacity planning and scratch tape pool reporting.
  • Acts as a single point of contact for all DPA related topics, including the operation of the DPA software as well as the infrastructure environment it supports. This includes but is not limited to agent deployment, Proxy Server management, network Firewall rules etc.
  • Leads weekly DPA engineering standing meetings and supports backup engineering team as needed for DPA related topics and works with engineering team to maintain stable operation of reporting tool.
  • Acts as a mentor on the DPA application and database supporting service line management team on the use of the tool to deliver on business requirements.
  • Delivers DPA technical maintenance which includes DPA application and database server maintenance as well as maintaining a global network of DPA agents installed on backup infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to installing patches on DPA application and database Servers as well as deploying upgraded agents to all global backup infrastructure supported by DPA.
  • Develops technical and business facing reports for technical subjects such as agent health and business subjects such as backup success reports.
  • Interacts with business partners to identify and document requirements for new business facing reports.
  • Maintains data supported by external data sources which enrich DPA end user reports.
  • Understands complex relationships between different extern data sets used to enrich backup success reports.
  • Maintains relationships with a diverse set up teams within the organization who are responsible for managing underlying organizational master data (ie, asset management data structures and other unique data elements that identify the sites and the infrastructure running in these global locations.)
  • In depth understanding on the utility of external data sets and how they are used to create Smart-Groups which are used in the DPA GUI.
  • Troubleshoots connectivity issues between various backup infrastructures and the DPA data collection environment and reports and manages Vendor Service Requests when needed to troubleshoot issues with DPA software.
  • Authors technical documentation as needed and ensures that all existing, related DPA documentation contain correct information and are published as necessary.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS/MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Number of DPA incidents impacting customer facing reporting less than 4 during the course of the calendar year (no more than 1 per quarter).
  • All agent levels at N or N-1.
  • Software release levels for Application and Database server are at N or N-1.
  • All documentation describing scheduled reports are current and approved by B&R service owner.
  • Agents down does not exceed 5 per week.
  • SR and RFE catalogue always up to date and reviewed with service owner on a monthly basis.
