Job Title: Senior Reliability Engineer - Linux - Inside IR35
Location: Sutton/Remote
Salary/Rate: £660 - Inside IR35
Job Type: Contract

One of our leading consultancies are looking for a skilled Site Reliability Engineer to join their Cirium tech group with enterprise and open source language development experience. This is a project running up until the end of the year with a likely extension falling into 2022.

Background: It will help if they have a Developer background - liaise and understand the developers - be familiar with the developers work and way they approach things, and speak - this is a huge part of this role - understanding how developer teams work - understand their problems - create new infrastructure for them

Job Responsibilities/Objectives:

  • Proactive site support to keep everything operational
  • Implementing a monitoring strategy and refining over time
  • Building and maintaining operational tooling and consulting on best practice for software delivery
  • Diagnosing challenging technical issues
  • Working as part of a cross-functional team to best implement internal applications
  • Diagnose complex system performance problems
  • Work closely within cross-functional teams to refine system monitoring and reporting
  • Identify and implement best practices by collaborating with other SREs and SRE teams
  • Understand Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and its implementation methods.
  • Identify and implement architectural best practices by collaborating with multiple teams and software engineers
  • Diagnose complex system problems using dumps, traces, or other diagnostics aids.
  • Manage and encourage new ideas from staff to foster improvements and innovation

Required Skills/Experience
The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • In depth technical knowledge of Linux
  • In depth knowledge of one or more database systems such as Postgres, SQL Server
  • Advanced knowledge of configuration management tools, such as puppet, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of best practices and tooling for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment
  • Good understanding of at least one high-level programming language ie .NET, C#, Python
  • Good knowledge of at least one high-level Scripting language, such as bash
  • Experience in Git is essential
  • Experience in designing, building, and maintaining high performance, highly available, production hosting environments, preferably using AWS (VPCs, security groups, RDS, S3, EC2, ECS) - the squad and the team will be coming to the team when the things go wrong - to cover
  • Understanding of security engineering and security best practices
  • Containerisation (Docker) on Linux
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one IaC tool such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible
  • A love of monitoring and experience in several different monitoring technologies
  • Familiarity with ELK (Elastic stack)
  • Familiarity with Ubunto (used local development)
  • Networking (get connectivity for services, set up new accounts) - AWS and understanding of network in general
  • Agile delivery - mostly task based on the day to day, more Kanban style (developer teams have Scrum style delivery squads)
  • Thorough understanding of major system components used in completing assigned tasks (ie Linux, Networking, Storage or Databases).
  • Knowledge of Vault (being pushed in the organisation - we need to implement some work in this language) and other security tooling
  • Ability to clearly explain (written, and orally) technical issues to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to administer scalable, cloud-native applications
